Yet when it comes to health and guns we embrace future technology pretty quick. New treatments, cures....red dots, tritium, semi autos, smokeless powder, polymers.

Or are you not allowing doctors to use anesthesia/medications and still shooting black powder n flintlocks?
You completely bypassed my point. It isn't about going Luddite. It is a matter of not making assumptions that future technology will in fact be invented, developed, and matured into a useable form as the basis for planning. There is no guarantee that it will happen until it happens. I have no problem with accepting technology which is useable and reliable. I am not willing to gamble on it being there just in time in a fashion reminiscent of going to the horse track with the rent money.

Or the succinct form: "A practical fusion power plant is 25 years away - and always will be"

There's a relatively practical fusion power plant 1 AU away. I'm working on how to connect it to my camping rig.

Problem is that it's a non renewable energy source that kills thousands each year, causes cancer, blindness, skin rash and sleeplessness for many.
It also causes global warming and climate change. Fades paint on cars, damages roofs... the list goes on and on.
