I got a text from my oldest son saying he is going to get a handgun and his license. He wants advice on the gun.

My advice was a handgun safe, as he has 4 of my grand kids in the house.

Training on gun safety/gun handling, as he has 4 of my grand kids in the house.

Find a shop where he can fondle and shoot, ideally.

Pick from manufacturers with a reputation for reliability and quality

Train, train, and train some more.

I am no expert, so what am I leaving out?

Get a copy of Eddie the Eagle (not the ski jumper) from NRA and tell him to show it to your G kids until they know it by heart.

QFT - Eddie Eagle - mine are now 6 and 8 going on 7 and 9 ... they can recite and follow them implicitly ...
They had these mastered before they were 5.
Then when mastered we moved straight to the 4 rules by Col Smith.

Both have shot 22's and my EDC (bug) 380 ... WHEN THEY WERE READY.

and if they ask - I will show them any of the guns I have - at an appropriate time.

Make sure "Mom" knows and follows - and the rest of your advise is sound.

Everyone has covered the important training.

As for picking out the gun... that's like someone moving to the US and asking recommendations on what car to buy.

He needs to try some out.
Maybe talk to people about that gun's advantages/disadvantages/features.

Someplace like maybe and INGO Meet & Shoot.

Carry the gun in a holster all the time (on your person or whats the point?) and don't put it in a safe. Edit: unless of coarse you take it off which you shouldn't except to sleep and shower and then use door locks)
Go to a range like point blank and rent multiple guns and buy the model he likes best.
Get proper training on safety, cleaning and use.
Teach children about gun safety. It never ends
Practice, practice, practice, get more training and practice.
Buy a big safe and fill it with guns and repeat

Definitely invest in a safe and here is why. You can have the most responsible and mature kids ever. BUT with 4 kids they at some point will have friends over. Your kids friends are what you have to be concerned with and where a safe is worth it's weight in gold.

And there are several ranges you can rent a variety of firearms. However if seeking advice find a good quality firearms guy that will give him unbiased pros cons what's he going to need out of it advice.

As an agency instructor everyone benefits from training.

    Good luck to him.

He lives in Goshen. I am recommending a safe because he cannot carry at work, and there are lots of kids, besides their own. I am not familiar with shops, ranges there.

Get him in contact with Cedartop for training up that way.
