Lots going on in the woods. Heard GHO, pileated and turkeys. Felt the tree stand tree bump like something hit it- turned out to be a pileated landing up high. A 4 point buck and 3 does passed close and I took a shot. Clean miss but gave her a small haircut. I appreciate a clean miss- no injured deer suffering.

Getting excited for firearm season coming up. Hoping for a wind out of the south…. Fingers crossed. I only have one good spot to set up my dad and a wind out of the south is ideal.

Got it done this morning at 7:27. I wasn’t sure if my shot was as good as it felt so I gave him an hour. I found him 35yards from where he was hit. Not a monster head, but he will eat just fine.

Nice 9pt I had pictures of got killed on road 3 weeks ago. Seen very little since then and just small ones. Saw some does and buck out in field, tried grunting but he didn't want to leave does. After going into woods nearby I kept grunting and a doe came running out and then a buck, doe came past me and buck came out at 45 yards to eat beans for 10 minutes. Was best I had seen and just decided if he got closer to take him, end my season and get started on cookouts at the fort. 30yd shot after I stopped him in field and he ran 150 yards out. Easy driving truck out. Had some great years hunting this spot, and was a fun hunt at 7:15 this morning. Now to get him skinned and on ice for 10 days and can. fullsizeoutput_829.jpeg

Looking forward to getting out for firearm season this year. The area I hunt is a reduction zone, It is a nice funnel area in the bottom of a steep valley and the thermals are CHAOS making the hunt a bit frustrating to say the least. I have had deer walk right under the stand and 15 min later get busted 100 yards away by a deer following the same path. This led to the latest adventure for this year "The Deer Bunker 5000" think German Pill Box for deer hunting. Started building it and got it installed spring of this year and it has grown in nicely. All treated wood construction, once built was covered in trowelable butyl rubber, and covered in woven filter fabric. (I work in the excavation industry)

Was in the stand at 6:30am and my feet didn't touch the ground until 6:15pm. Two small bucks this morning and eight does throughout the day, zero shooters. Stand wasn't level and my back is wrecked but the alarm is set for 5:00 and I'll be at it again tomorrow.
Exact same effort from me in Shelby Co., only no does,(well, one) which is terrible. I've got big bucks moving through, but not while I was there. Try to explain that effort to a non-hunter. They just shake their head. I'll be in Owen Co later this coming week, and they have several big ones moving through that property.

I been hunting hard the last couple of weeks at my place in Jefferson county. On the 1st I had 2 nice shooter bucks within 30 yards but no shot. One in the morning and one in the afternoon. Seen lots of small bucks bothering does but not the big ones.
Yesterday morning had a decent 8 point come by me with his nose on the ground. I haven’t seen anything yet this morning.
Good luck to all that’s out hunting

Got the deer rifle out to sight in. Set up in a farm lane from 200 yards shooting at an 8 inch gong target. Was going to be easy. Maybe 5 rounds to check zero. 10 rounds later I was not even on the target. The only shot that hit steel I moved up to 25 yards, and the target fell over upon impact. I gave up and let my kids plink with the 10/22 I brought.

    Sigh...

Gonna be more than a small effort. Going to Deer Creek this week to try to get something on paper.

Sighting in rifles is my least favorite part of shooting.
