First off, I agree! Dangerous, illegal, violates rules 2, 3 and 4, AND a waste of ammo!

Second, major props for the Blood, Sweat, & Tears reference ;)

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is reminding Hoosiers that not only is it dangerous to fire a weapon in the air as a way to ring in the New Year — it’s also illegal.

Every year, IMPD says it responds to several calls on New Year’s Eve involving shots fired.

Police say a bullet fired into the air can travel as far as a mile or more skyward, and as IMPD put it: “What goes up must come down.”

If someone is arrested for firing a weapon, they could be charged with criminal recklessness. The level 6 felony is “punishable by six months up to two and a half years in jail, and a potential fine of up to $10,000.”

IMPD urges you to call 911 if you see someone firing a weapon.

Ah, it's that time of year again when I reminisce about the good 'ole days going to work at Wishard on January 2nd & finding spent 7.62 projectiles on the ground in the west lot.

    Good times, good times.

Planning to save on range fees and zero some optics in the parking lot of my building on NYE. Learned last year you can shoot all you want for about two hours and nobody will do anything about it.

Does it distinguish between a real shot and a digital recording of a real shot?
Pretty hard to digitally mimic the actual decibels and concussion of a firearm discharge. I don't see it being feasible without some very specific and powerful equipment.

Microphones have a hard time accurately recording a gunshot, and even if you had an accurate recording, traditional speakers have a hard time playing it accurately and with the same 'punch'

And a lot of cities in the US, including Indianapolis, have gunshot location systems ...

Testing phase is over, no active system right now. There are never charges for doing this so there is no point in tracking it down. All officers do is take cover from falling rounds during the new year celebration.

It's sad that IMPD's only response to this massive public safety problem is meeking asking criminals "please don't".

Just what would you have them do when there are literally hundreds of people doing it all over the city? And that's in addition to the "regular" crimes that don't stop just because it's New Year's Eve.

That's the kind of reply I see from someone that doesn't deal with it every year. We literally do nothing about it also. There is really nothing you can do when a hundred people are doing it at the same time while most of our officers are busy with actual problems.

    They’re getting an early start.

We had some gunplay last night uncomfortably close to the house. Just after midnight someone in a white pickup fired off 8-9 rounds into the air as they rounded the corner and passed our house. Police responded and collected a bunch of 7.62x39 steel cases from the street. I was impressed with the neighborhood response. It fit the rural small town "**** around and find out" image pretty well. Old man across the street came over with an old browning shotgun to make sure everyone was ok. Younger guy who lives next door came out with a slung AK to check on us and said "I got that ****er on camera!"
