Isn't the constant loading and unloading what wears the spring out? Not just leaving them empty or loaded?

This is correct. Modern springs fatigue from work, not from setting around compressed.

A new spring will "settle in" to a slightly shortened state, but it'll only go so far.

It won't hurt them, and I had this idea once that I was going to store all the rounds I was reloading, in magazines ready to go.

I realized that wasn't practical after I got an auto-indexing turret press with which to do my handgun ammo, but this was the start.
I'm not concerned with the magazines lifespan here, I'm curious the reason to keep 35-40 loaded pistol mags around?

Well, you see, my wife is more comfortable in town, so we bought a house inside city limits. I keep most of my guns out in the country at my parents' house these days since I've had a range set up in the woods out there since I was 16. Just keeps me from lugging stuff back and forth.

Some years ago now those woods were infiltrated by a great number of guerilla soldiers.

Sometimes, just for a person to make it safely back to the house, we need to lay down covering and suppressive fire, and so we keep everything loaded up and ready.

The rebel guerillas are spreading, sometimes even ambushing non-combatants as they take out the trash. It's no longer safe for anyone.

For your benefit, I've attached a picture representative of the typical guerilla fighter we're facing. They may be cute, but never forget how deadly they can be!

A spring's tension degrades from extending and contracting. I forgot the equation we used in physics class, but the Tension Coefficient (I believe the variable was K) changes due to work.

Edit: Wabatuckian beat me to it.

I keep all 20 standard cap mags for the EBR's full, all 14 1911 mags full as well. Carry guns have one in them, 2 spares with them full of SD ammo. The rest all have 230gr ball for making noise and large holes. Then I can keep my cans topped off (1000 for the .45 and 1500 for the .223) as needed.

The question as to "why"? Why the **** not? Needing an explanation for doing something that has zero impact on anyone else is beyond idiotic and sounds like trolling. But you gotta consider the source.

An unloaded magazine is useless, and might as well be foam dart in a mad minute. My philosophy on this is as AI increases in its capabilities, we are getting closer to the day that it realizes that it no longer needs humanity. That mixed with the Military Industrial Complex's desire for autonomous weapons, it will be likely Judgment Day will be soon upon us. I've seen the movies. I don't want to have to need a young John Connor constantly loading my 1911 while a T-1000 is on the hood of my Explorer.

Rather than waste money on spare magazines I just buy more Hi Point C9s when they're on sale. When the magazine is empty, I throw that brick at the intruder and then pull out the next one.

You think running a shotgun is enough to scare off a home invader?! Wait until they see you throw your pistol and pull out another... and another... and another.

I'm just curious for reasons to keep a gross of magazines loaded for?
To me, a magazine is a consumable.
This is an old, well worn debate. It goes into the category of 5.56 vs .223, .308 vs. 7.62x51, potatoe vs. potato.

The exercise of compressing and decompressing works the metal. The spring in a static state does not wear out the spring any faster. There, that's my opinion. YMMV.

I feel like I’m hearing Celine Dion singing “you are not alone, I am here with you”.

I have a minimum of 10 mags for all of my favorite guns. But if we’re talking Glock 17 round mags, I have 40 or 50 of them. $19.99 is such a great price for reliable mags.

And I love loading things up before I go to the range, so my 1 hour of range time is 1 hour of range time, and not 48 minutes of me loading mags.

That has nothing to do with my question. Post #10
