Yeah, I park on three or four channels during the week. #guns and ##slackware on Freenode and then a couple others. The two on Freenode can be quite busy at times.

Channels run through apps. They are public, private, shared, etc., to the users selection of topics. Gamers use these a lot to communicate.

IRC = Internet relay chat. Basically you can (or used to, haven’t done it for years might have changed) download a app on computer. Open the app and you can use default servers on it and search for chats, or connect to a particular server and join different “rooms” in that server. It’s almost formatted like the forum is, but instead of threads it would be chatrooms. We used to use it in a gaming group I was with in high school. The server was something like chat.gmr.com or something like that. Then you could type /join #guns and it would put you in the guns chat room.

edit: The nerd part didn’t come until later when we got into the mIRC. That was a program where you could program scripts to do certain things. Example, in the chat when somebody said lol you could program a script to automatically reply with a set phrase. It would have been great for the TDS era, so if someone mentioned impeachment you could make it automatically reply with TDS! Or something similar. You could also program it to say phrases you type. So again if I typed lol I had mine scripted to type Laughing out Loud in the chat room. It was fun at first. Got annoying fast tho cause people would repeat phrases to make it continually reply with your programmed phrases, the chat would fill up with your programmed responses and it’d kick you for flooding the chat lol.

I had no idea these still existed. I might have to blow the dust off my pc and hook it back up. I only use the pc for iracing but unhooked it about a year ago. IRC was a blast back in the day, that’s awesome it’s still going!

So you guys are talking about those old "Chat Rooms". Why didn't you just say CHAT ROOMS!

Wasn't that barely past the "Blinking C" days? Why would people use this now? Like we have forms and internet? Are there special servers with special people that sell special things???? or do special favors??? Am I missing out?

It's like going backwards.

An Infinity Solutions Alumni created a channel for Alumni as a backup account should the Book Face/ Instagram go down. It has a posting sections like #general chat, #bartertown, #fun memes, etc.

LOL, as to why use them now I couldn’t answer that, I haven’t been on for years. It was a lot of fun back then tho, and it’s a lot different than forums. As to the special servers with people selling special things... yes lol. It is the internet after all. You can find chat rooms for anything. Literally. And we had forums back in those days also, I’m willing to bet if ingo created a chat server it would be busier than the forum is, because you can sit and talk back and forth without pause and waiting for reply. It’s just different.

Now I have a question... wtf is “blinking c” lol
