It made national news. Fails to mention who has been the Mayor the last 8 years, that he was MIA during the riots, did away with the Public Safety Director, his hand-picked replacement for Prosecutor is a revolving door installer, has a real challenge for re-election, is up for election in November...

There should be criminal penalties for knowingly and intentionally passing illegal laws.

The Star article states "...bans assault rifles within the city limits..." What will this do to the 1500 Gun Show and the Stout Field show?

Funny, you should mention that. I saw the following in the public comments on the Fox article linked above (edited slightly):

“In 2011, Florida enacted [a] preemption measure designed to … restrict local authority to regulate firearms. The measure … includes language intended to personally punish local legislators who cause a preempted law to be passed or enforced.

in (sic) 2011, after many lawsuits were filed against localities challenging preempted statutes, the state inserted a penalty provision into the statute. Local officials would now be fined up to $5,000 for knowingly passing preempted ordinances with a kicker: “public funds may not be used to defend or reimburse” the official for their unlawful conduct.

Florida's highest court upheld the penalty provision in the state's preemption statute
, which holds local officials accountable by directly fining them for knowingly passing preempted ordinances.”

Sounds good to me. If our legislators are looking for something to do next legislative session, this would be one of my suggestions.

This whole thing is strictly political. Let's see, if the state overturns all gun laws, then we have a failsafe plan that will immediately go into affect. Now the CC are all patting each other on the back.
Incredible that people in Marion County put up with this BS.

The promoters will probably go elsewhere if the city starts imposing new rules on it. I'm sure they can find another spot that will welcome their business.

I'm sick and tired of having to play whack-a-mole with measures like the Indy one, towns putting up pre-empted signage at parks, South Bend not cleaning up it's ordinances, preying on the ignorant, etc.

We've had statewide pre-emption in place long enough all these public officials should know better. It's high time for a penalty provision like Florida.

The state will fight it. One of the things I enjoy about Indiana is our gun laws. One of which isn't even about guns specifically. The state doesn’t allow a city ordinance to conflict with state law.

We all know that point, we want penalties for those that make the state “fight” a law clearly defiant of state law. They are wasting our money…

Well I am thinking we could break up Unigov, turn the county and smaller Marion county cities loose, and put the old city limits under direct control of the state legislature and governor. Under the auspices that it is the state capitol.. like Washington DC.
