Drug dealer that didn't want to go back to jail. I've been waiting for the name, there have been a few angry dealers on the local police blotter lately that would fit that type.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone pulled over in Mitchell before. I used to go downtown to the flea markets around the square pretty often, sometimes to BRI, now mostly just passing through on my way to Bedford.
Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Used to drive through there a lot when our oldest was going to ISU. I don’t remember ever seeing an actual Mitchell police car.

Update from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s office.

    DATE: February 5, 2023

    UPDATE: February 5, 2023 at 5:30 p.m.

After continuing to investigate the officer-involved shooting that occurred Sunday morning, February 5, 2023, in Mitchell, Indiana, Detectives with the Indiana State Police have the following additional information to release that includes the names of the wounded officers and the deceased suspect.

One of the officers involved in the police involved shooting this morning in Mitchell, Indiana is Lawrence County Sheriff's Deputy Joshua Rhoades, a five year veteran of the department with the past three years served as a road deputy. The incident also involved Mitchell Police Officer Christian Anderson, a three year veteran of the police department.

Deputy Rhoades suffered two non-life threatening gunshot wounds. He was first transported by ambulance to IU Bedford Hospital and then transferred by helicopter to IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He has sense been released from the hospital.

Officer Anderson suffered one non-life threatening gunshot wound. He was transported by ambulance to IU Bedford then transferred to IU Methodist by helicopter for treatment. He remains hospitalized in stable condition.

The suspect was identified as 29 year old Anthony Richmond of West Baden Springs, Indiana. He received emergency medical aid at the scene by officers and firefighters, he was loaded into an ambulance and was pronounced deceased in the ambulance.

Preliminary investigation has revealed Richmond fired several rounds at the officers while they were physically apprehending him after he fled from the original location of the traffic stop. The incident was captured on the officers' body cameras and the footage is being reviewed by investigators.

Lawrence County Sheriff Greg Day, said. “This tragic incident underscores the dangers that law enforcement officers face each day, even in our beloved Lawrence County. I am extremely proud of the actions and response by officers from my office as well as our law enforcement and first responder partners. I am very thankful Deputy Rhoades and Officer Anderson will make full recoveries, and I am mindful that a family is mourning the loss of a loved one. The lives of many people were affected by a senseless criminal act. Thank you to our brave officers for their dedication and courage.”

The Indiana State Police is the lead investigating agency for this incident, any information about this case will be released from the Indiana State Police or the Lawrence County Prosecutor's Office. Releasing unconfirmed information prematurely, can adversely affect the integrity of an investigation and be detrimental to family members of those involved.

This definitely caught my attention this AM. When I looked up the address I figured it was near the Sinclair station, or one of the dozen houses in the area (it gets sparse out that way.)

Airlifted the two Officers to Indianapolis. To me that says this was pretty serious. I'd expect it to be beyond the local GP Doc in Mitchell, but Bedford and Bloomington are a lot closer. Keep the Officers in your prayers.

Mitchell, not far from where I grew up. Until this morning all I ever heard about Mitchell PD is that they have been running speed traps on 60 east of town since the Truman Administration.

As Mr Dylan said, the times they are a changin. Not for the better from what I've seen.
Bloomington stuffed most of their serious trauma patients straight on the helicopter to Indy, as I recall. Mitchell is a long way from anywhere else.

Used to pass through that part of Mitchell all the time. Crazy.

Glad to read the officers do not appear to be in serious risk of loss of life or limb.

I pray they make a full recovery physically and mentally, and are able to return to work.

Sad that the feral human had to injure others on his way to h***.

    Near the big river.
We were in Mitchell last week for the grandson's basketball game .

Really bad, it is a very rural town. Usually hard working farmers/families.

Our middle daughters college roommate and best friend is from there.

Prayers for the officers. This is why when I hear about an incident where a suspect is killed, I almost never think it's an issue. To my mind, if you are resisting a valid stop by police, everything afterwards is on you. That fits for a vast majority of incidents, though admittedly not all.

    Wow!

What’s up with the small town shoot outs lately?

That stuff needs to stay in Indy, Gary, SB, Jeffersonville.
Not sure about your small town, but ours has been the meetup up place for a few years now. They actually rent a couple low income apartments and it is where the urban yutes from Chicago, Gary or Lake county in general will meet up with the other urban yutes from South Bend, Indy, Fort Wayne.

They routinely get busted with larger quantities, but they know that the small 1-2 officer PD can't keep up with them.
They are regularly busted on the nearby highways with large amounts of heroin and other drugs.

Our is close to 3 highways, 35, 30, and 31 so it is easy for meetups, and a lot less police presence.

We are out in the sticks and have a 16 Officer Police force. And a population of about 7300 if you fart off key they know.

You see drug busts in the paper weekly some of them on I-64 by the ISP. It’s nothing compared to areas like Scott county.

Hamlet is less than a 1000 people and usually only 1 full-time officer, the Town Marshall.
