Get a nice multi role plinker like the rugr mkIV. On the other hand you could get a nice hunting setup on an 870 or mossburg 500 w/ 2 barrels. One barel for home defense/deer slugs and one for shooting clays or bird hunting. One purchase, many options!

There isn't much in that range I would be to interested in. Maybe a Glock 48 MOS, but likely a Glock 44 since I like having rimfire trainers for my centerfires.
I really think shooting rimfires as part of my weekly range sessions is improving my centerfire abilities, possibly even quicker than if I shot centerfire exclusively.

Probably a Rock Island STK100. Seems to fix the issues I had with my Glock 17 - mostly grip and grip angle - and adds many features. So that’s a WANT.

    Though what I really NEED is a second/backup M&P 2.0 9C.
I had one, good gun. I traded it away, wish I hadn't now, just didn't need a full size 9mm at the time.
For my $500 gun, I'd buy a Kel Tec P17, and a bunch of ammo...

When I was using a Remington 700 for work, I shot my CZ455 a bunch as an inexpensive trainer. I found a very noticeable improvement on how fast I could get behind the rifle, get set up, and be ready to fire. I found it surprising as I was concentrating on the shooting aspect and trigger time itself, but found a lot more benefits than I had expected.
