Had a mutt and a lab mix running the property this morning. I thought I knew where they lived so I stopped in and introduced myself. Wrong house. The owners live another half mile down the road. SSShhh?

I did see four different bucks yesterday morning. Of course, the two shooters were a couple hundred yards away. The four and the six went through at twenty yards. Nothing but canines this morning.

Well crap. Rattled antlers first time this season and 5 minutes later here come little buck and my target buck! Just like a dream they came and little one past by. Big buck came straight and stopped 25 yards facing me, had camera on waited…. Wow! Then he finally turned to circle around me and at 23 yards let the crossbow fire and heard loud wack and off he went. Knew I double lunged him, was so happy…. But that ended soon enough. No arrow and no blood…. Went 75 yards and found arrow with broadhead and some blood and meat… then later found fletching with blood. Son came and we tracked slowly the drops of blood for between 600- 800 yards…. Never bumped him never found a bed, finally disappeared before a huge cornfield. All the drops of blood wouldn’t of filled a pop can. Talked to two dog trackers about it and we all concluded not to track. Evidence and experience said high shot into backstraps above spine and out opposed side shoulder area, no vitals hit. Deer will make it. Man I am bummed. But not my first rodeo but I wanted the buck really bad, could of ducked a little bit also. Regardless had my chance. I had been on a great streak last few years with nice bucks guessed I deserved a pride check I guess. Feel bad but confident at least he isn’t wasted and maybe another hunter can take him. I’ll keep on and hope I get another chance at him. But most likely not from that same stand, maybe a doe will bring him in in another spot later. I never rattle until after Oct 25th, and it sure worked though.
Been there, done that and I feel your pain.
I rattled in a 160 class deer at Camp Atterbury, Columbus Day 2003. Tracked it for almost a 1/2 mile through a brushy field before we lost him. A shotgunner got him several weeks later on one of the state hunts. I shot him on the east side and he was killed on the west side chasing does. He still had the front half of my arrow in his neck and he had deteriorated alot. First deer I had shot at with a bow in 15 years and it had to be a 160. He scored 160 5/8".
I'm sorry you lost your deer but they can recover from alot.

Photos of shooter bucks are starting to trickle in, almost all well after dark or well before daylight though. After a slow start, it probably ended up being my best October ever for number and quality of shooters. Hopefully, November brings more new bucks, more frequent activity, and more daylight activity as it usually does.

    far from here
I'm sick as a dog. Coughing, lungs full, aching, sitting on the can as I type this. Wife livid pissed this morning when she saw me put my gear in the truck for after work.
    Hey, it's the rut!
Good for you. You can’t kill them from your recliner. BTW I am typing this from my tree stand. Good luck this season.

Rattled and called a 8 pt I hadn't seen before but just wouldn't come all the way in. Then later a 6 pt went by this morning. Bucks are checking out new territory for sure. Just don't like the evenings where I hunt, seems I never see them until its right at dark then I'm stuck in the stand for awhile, so sticking to mornings a few more days. I have noticed what seems to be more bucks takin in afternoon and right before dark on FB. Seen a guy yesterday went out at 11:30 a.m. and got a huge buck at 1:30 calling him in.

Had a small 7 just before dark then a nice doe right at the end of legal light. Had to spook her off a half hour later so I could leave.

Too dark. And I'm pretty tired. Seemed like a lot of work at the time.
    Yep...been there!

On old man once told me deer hunting can be like waiting at a bus stop. You wait and wait wondering if it will ever show. Then when it shows up you're all excited...then you realize it's taking you to work.

If you had your choice for hunting deer...
I have two more or less identical rifles.
    Identical all but the caliber.
Both AR-15 platform, one in 6.5 Grendel, the other in .350 Legend.
    Both have 18" barrels.
Grendel ammo is Hornady 123gr SST
Legend ammo is Winchester 180gr Power Point

My shots will be 165 yards or less.
Which would you choose and why.

Grendel. Will shoot flatter. Can double as a coyote rifle at farther distances.
At < 165 yards, do you really think trajectory will make that much of a difference?
Remember, I'm not looking to buy one or the other.
Already have both, and ammo for both, and I'm in the Legend could double as a yote gun too.
