As I read it and seen the charts they are raising them for all residents and non residents. My bundle cost 68.75 will be 91.00 plus whatever tax on top of that. That’s not including any process fees after the fact. Just my two cents. 5.1 billion in surplus and raise it….??

The new fees will go toward habitat restoration, maintenance of public lands, scientific research and education, expansion of other services and the Indiana DNR Division of Law Enforcement, according to DNR.

Not to say anything positive about what the government does, because there is very little, but I'm not all that outraged. I can think of at least 10 other things I'd complain about before this.

They raised land taxes 300%.....they can do what ever they want. People went to courthouse and nobody at courthouse would say who passed it. its a joke. Poor disabled ex FIL on fixed income was paying out $1000 a year for land taxes each year...shot up to $3000......you never own your own land,.....don't pay they come get it and your looking for a new home and land. Oh but the farmers don't have to pay because they got "farm land." But if you just got land or woods your screwed...thankfully we only set on 2 acres. Wabash County.
I would also be curious as to what caused such a large increase. Are there new ditch taxes? New fire territory/department? School referendum to fund some large building project? Something had to change to result in this. There are ways to appeal increased taxes, but there are deadlines for doing so. I would be presenting my case to the PTABOA board and trying to get it lowered.

Mom, I’ll bet dollars to doughnuts that they reassessed it, changed the designation from agriculture then that got boosted by recent sale prices.

I just heard that some farm land in Tipton county just sent for over $14,000 per acre. Developers are paying $30,000-$50,000 for that land. This can quickly escalate property values without the politicians doing a thing. Folks love to hear their property is rising in value but not their taxes…

That makes sense also. As you said previously though, if they can show that they are raising timber that could be logged, that counts as agriculture.

The items I mentioned are all things that I have seen happen in our area that have increased taxes. The new ditch tax initially added $10 per acre to everyone's taxes that were in the designated area for the first year. My uncle with 300 acres was not at all happy with his tax bill that year. It added $900 to our taxes that year along with $1 per acre every year after that. We don't have any ditches near our property and live on sandy soil that is like beach sand. We would love to have a ditch to provide water to our property. Instead, we get to pay for maintaining ditches that are miles away because we are in the "watershed area" designated on some map.

I hear ya. my mom lives a half mile from one of those ditches in Hendricks county in my boyhood home, pays an outrageous amount for maintaining that damn ditch and her drain tile that supposedly ties into it, but the drain tile hasnt worked for a decade and they arent willing to do anything about it. Any significant rain and her yard floods for a week or two. Yet the tile is exposed via a 8" hole in the ground downstream of where it floods. And unfortunately I cant get her to raise hell.

They have come out and surveyed twice in the last 5 years leaving stakes and flags, but never come back to actually do anything. Its a cruel joke. Its like they are going through the motions to justify their (taxation) existence, but dont actually do any real work.

We are a dying County, Population has dropped the last 40 years while another county north of us continues to grow for the last 40 years....our county tax is one if not the highest now in the state. Less people means more $$$ needed to feed the government beast, pretty much controlled by Republicans. Want to start a business like Aldis, in this town or a gas station...lol...forget it. Nothing grows.....we are home to the first electrically lit city in the world, Chrystal Gale lived here growing up, and one of the worlds worse serial killers grew up and learned his "trade" here.....so there are things to be proud of I guess. The Republican Party sure ain't one of them though.

Could you explain how they are getting around the 1% homestead, 2% agricultural and rental property, and 3% business, property tax that is in the state constitution since late 2000’s? State law prempts the county on property taxes. The county can levy what the heck they want but if it rises above the constitutional thresholds the constitutional circuit breaker kicks in.

    How can this be?

I assure you they are not and there is no proof they are. Just the kind of stuff spread by rumor but not true. Land either meets the definition of agriculture or it doesn’t. Nobody is screwing anyone if it used agricultural and no longer meets the definition and is changed to the proper classification.

What I posted in my previous post is the law in Indiana and if they are not following it the people should sue them it is a slam dunk case…

The land I was talking about was ex FIL, doubt my son is lying to me. Another guy has all woods he lives in, he is in a rage so go talk to him, know him personally. He went as well as others to Wabash court house, nobody will gibe no info....all he got was he could next year put his woods into some kind of different classification...maybe like a "refuge" ? Not sure and his taxes would go down. Until then he is stuck paying $500 a month for his little woods. Which is a ton more than he was paying.....so maybe they reclassified everything and thats why the increase...? But it did go up sky high, and no one was ever told. But ya maybe these people I know are just lying. I emailed all 3 republicans at the courthouse asking why all this was happening and who is responsible, not a single one emailed me back.....but who knows maybe I'm lying about that also.

Wabash. But I guess according to ironlike I'm a liar and no one paid higher taxes up to and including 300%, guess people just made crap up and sent too much $$$ to the court house. I don't know why they went up, I don't know about classifications I just know people are outraged and paid a crap load in taxes this year. I even asked my sister the neighbor of the guy paying out....she told me its the truth, but she didn't haven't to pay out more because they got farm land.....she probably lied also, we are all liars.
