    Yeah, so much for backyard mechanics, tinkering and hotrodding. Say goodbye to the auto aftermarket. Except for appearance mods like wheels, no one will be able to mod EVs, since everything is locked down by software/patents or is way too integrated and complex to play with.

    Eventually, self-driving will be mandated and then your car will only take you to approved destinations via approved routes. Personal autonomy will disappear.
    Some utopia, huh?

    I don’t really care how much quicker an EV might be compared to ICE, they have no soul, no individuality or personality.

    Some utopia, huh?
    As things get more advanced back yard mechanics will need to get more advanced. Ever see the Youtube channel Rich Rebuilds? He mods EV's, mostly Teslas, a lot.
    .
    About "soul", that's really just a perception. Personally, I don't tend to think of vehicles as "souls", or having a unique personality--they're machines with tolerance stackup, and the older they get, their systems degrade to various states of disrepair. That gives them seemingly unique quirks. Maybe one could abstract that as "personality".

    An EV is just a car, like ICE vehicles are just cars. Pros and cons to each.

    Can you mod your Mac or your iPad or your phone or smart TV?

    The systems they put into cars are not built like pc’s, but more like phones. The operating systems and data are all encrypted with factory keys and locked to that hardware and you cannot modify the hardware without having access to the private key. Any attempt to modify the factory software without the factory keys will fail to run.

    Part of the purpose of forcing us into these new technologies has little to do with climate change or the green economy. It's all about removing control/ownership from the people to the ones in control. See how much sofware you can no longer buy to own a copy of and run at will for as long as you like. Most new software is now cloud (SAAS) based. MIcrosoft is pushing the next version of windows to be in the cloud, office is no longer on disk - you need office365 now, etc. etc., Adobe photoshop? cloud based. If you stop paying you lose the ability to access the content you created with it. If the innernet goes down? You lose access to your data.

    These all-electronic cars will eventually be the same, like sofware you won't really own your vehicle anymore - you will rent it in perpetuity.
    Tesla is particularly ****** about letting people mod their cars. You do stuff they don't like, they'll brick your car remotely. But there's still stuff you can do as evidenced by various Youtube channels with people doing mods. And you can mod your mac, your iPad, or your phone. A lot of people do. But it does take a willingness to get into the weeds of the tech.

    Wait till EV owners get hit with an “excise road use tax”.....or....You’ll prolly have to “buy” *miles to be driven*.
    Hey, ya gotta fund the road infrastructure some how....

    ~~~~~Future~~~~
    End of the year will have folks clogging all the roadways trying to use their “unused drive miles” before they loose them to a new year.
    Kinda like the old cell phone company’s policy’s with purchased minutes.
    Use ‘em or lose-’em!!!!!
    I'll grant you that it fell out of favor over time, but I'm from the muscle car era, and I love it. Spend a lot of time polishing it though.
    I'm from the muscle car era too. I hated it then. Still hate it. I'd rather have color-keyed or black trim than chrome. One of the reasons I bought the truck I have. Almost no chrome.
    Yes but you have to jailbreak them which generally voids warranty and will no longer get vendor support.
    Gamers regularly mod pc’s. I don’t think there’ll be any issues modding ev in the future. It may even be easier.
    that said I like the sound gas vehicles make better.
    But it will be illegal to do so. I still do not fully get the details but farmers are forbidden to alter the software of their tractors and I believe it went to the Supreme Court and they agreed.
    Yes? You can jail break an iphone or root an android and overclock them. Would you, i guess thats up to you. EV's are just starting to get out of the gate and the tesla p100d is a sedan that outruns a lot of super cars. Would you want to modify a mid 10's sedan with a warranty? idk. But once they get older, cheaper im sure you'll see it. Im not going to get into the whole conspiracy theory thing.
    I have personally discussed the EV and the looming grid crisis. Currently we have support for just a few EV cars charging per street or block. The infrastructure cost will be staggering and disruption of your regularly scheduled life will occur...
    The need for whole house generators is increasing quickly...
    You’re not wrong, as they are shutting down coal fired plants even here in Indiana
    I don't think it'll be illegal. But, likely manufacturers won't want you to mess with stuff. Like I said, Tesla is really about that. I think they have problems enough with warranty issues that I think they just don't want the added warranty liability.
    Another colossal mistake! NO other energy source we have has onsite reserves, a part of the problem in Texas with their gas fired plants, when the gas flow was disrupted they had nada, zilch. A typical coal fired plant has 90 days of easy to store energy sitting right there, solar, wind, nuclear, and gas have no reserve capacity in place and to do so is cost prohibitive.
    We are building our own folly...
    Again weak on details but it will be a violation of the terms of sale (use, contract, etc.) and therefore illegal to alter, even on what you"own", as you really never own it as long as you have what others still own the rights to...
