Who cares if he went to Cancun, as others have said what is he going to do, i'm sure he's not the only one that got out of dodge. The only reason it's an issue is because the media made it one. Is the media going to ask biden if he went to bed early while TX was freezing? Cruz probably won't make this mistake again, with Trump gone the MSM and dems are going to need a new punching bag.

We have countless people clamoring for taking personal responsibility to ensure the welfare of themselves and their families.

I guess that doesn't apply to GOP Senators.
Philosophically I agree. Politically, putting the wife and kids on a plane, staying himself, and better yet finding an opportunity for a Churchill-like leadership moment would have been a much better choice

The media will just do another loving story about Biden putting another log on the fire before he tucks himself into his cozy little bed.

Meanwhile they'll leave out the Texas is frozen angle.

This ordeal is bull **** partisan politics plain and simple.

Yeah I guess you're right. Cruz should've stayed and handed out blankets.

Didn’t AOC accuse him of trying to have her killed? Surprised the headlines weren’t “Ted Cruz goes to Mexico in search of new hit man”

Seriously tho, do I blame him? Nope. If I had the ability and my power was off I would have done the same.

Does it look bad? Yup. He’s elected to represent his constituents, and deserting them during a crisis isn’t a good look.

I don't care that he left, moving his family to a safer/warmer location. There are two other issues that make this particular move problematic. FIRST it's the place they traveled to. Cancun. Most normal Americans, when sending family to safety, from say a hurricane, send them someplace normal like a few states over, out of range of danger. They don't send them off on vacations, and invite their friends to ride it out with them. SECOND, Cruz is a publicly elected Texas official. When problems arise and people are suffering in a particular state, conventional wisdom is that you stick around and try to help people; at the very least show your face so people don't think you have abandoned them. Cruz's actions come off as tone deaf.
The first few posters in this thread seem to understand those points. Why is it so difficult to understand for others?

Well said. I do feel compelled to put in a word for other members so far that they do have valid points, just overlooking that the optics and appearance of concern for constituents suck.

First, they're in TX so Cancun was just down the street that'd be better than Oklahoma lol. Second, i'm from MI so i've had my share of power outages in snowstorms and my first thought was never where is my senator! I'm not sure many posters were that upset with what he did versus how it looks, two different things.

This would not be such a big deal if the MSM had'nt exploited it for political purposes. On the flipside I guess Cruz should have expected it since he's always been targeted.

I used to vote for the guy due to there being no preferable alternative. If not for moving a thousand miles north I still would even though he's no more a Texan than GHW Bush.

Last thing I want is a politician involving themselves with somebody trying to do their job, no way that doesn't slow the process down.

First and foremost he has a family to look out for. Could care less where they went to get away.
If he wants to do anything, Give praise to the men and women out busting their ass to fix the problem, just stay out of their way. They have enough to worry about with long hours and dangerous jobs.

How is going to Cancun from Texas so much different than going a "couple of states over"? Houston to Cancun is around 790 miles. Houston to Phoneix is 1009.

Why is better to go to a different state than a different country? As I said before, he could just be in DC. Is that really better?

This whole thing is a crock of :poop: drummed up by the media. People generally have no clue where their senators are, and generally don't care. The only reason this is known about is because of him being an outspoken Republican. That of course makes it national news.

I will say, he probably should have known the media would crucify him for this.
