Looking to pick up a Springfield Armory XDm 9mm, I had looked at Cheaper Than Dirt and was going to order and then I did a search for reviews about CTD and saw a lot of negative reviews. So please help me out, which online dealer is low priced and yet still is honest and ships product quickly.

There is no single best online business. There are actually a number of good ones. You are correct that CTD has earned a lot of bad reputation despite sometimes good prices. As noted above, local businesses (where your gun would be delivered anyway) should be considered as well.

Take a day and visit your LGSs - your in Indy - there is quite a few to pick from - a few have indoor ranges - stay away from Dons - you might save a few bucks online but if you dont get out and experience the LGSs your missing the INGO point entirely - warranty issues, gunsmithing, upgrades, or just plain questions you have are easier delt with with a LGS than a online boxstore - I would suggest Elmores and talk to Jason - Im sure some here on Ingo can suggest more - I bet JetGirl can help get you pointed in the right direction too - if you want to save a few bucks become a site supporter and check out the classifieds or hang out get into a few conversations with like-minded peeps - 50 quality posts isnt hard to get if you participate - get your 50 save your site donation and then use the classifieds - if your hellbent on getting one online CTD is the last place I would suggest - I personally would use GM or Dicks online before CTD - jmho -

I would agree with visiting your LGS if you can. If you live in Indy, there's no reason not to head to the west/SW/south side of town, you have access to several really good LGS options. Unless you are looking for something unusual or specific, you will often end up paying less at your LGS than paying for shipping and an FFL transfer. Not to mention you can carefully inspect your purchase before you plunk down any $$.

For the online sites, I do like "Grab-a-Gun" and "Sportsman's Outdoor Superstore". I've never shopped CTD, and don't plan to based on how they behaved with pricing during the last panic. Bud's is OK, but pay attention to the "buy now" vs. the "cash" price, it can be a little misleading if you're not careful.

I'm sorry but I cannot recommend Elmore's. I've never been in there and actually left feeling satisfied. They always seem too busy smoking or chatting with a regular to give you the time of day. And if you do get their attention, don't be surprised if they stand their idly as if you are wasting their time.

Could be due to my age, but I don't feel they have ever taken me seriously.

I used them twice for repairs when I lived in Franklin and Jason took care of me both times - had a large selection of handguns and rifles to checkout while I was waiting - the day you visited might have been a bad day for them or something else - I dont live close to Indy anymore but I do know if you didnt like Elmores theres a alot more LGSs to check out that are better than a online store - Bradis is one and i know theres a few good ones in Beechgrove too - suggest one you had a good experience in for the new guy if you have a difference in opinion - Im a firm believer if you live in a community support it when you can

Since you live in Indy, I will have to echo some of the previous posters that say check out local before you buy online. I don't have a decent shop anywhere close to me, so I make a lot of online purchases. I can't say there's one online dealer that stands above the rest. You just have to check a few to see who has a deal on what you're looking for. Some of the online places I have bought from in the past are Bud's, Kentucky Gun Company, Tombstone Tactical, and Grabagun (they packaged two of my orders like crap, so they're my least favorite). If you do buy online, I encourage you to do your homework and know the dealers policies before hitting the purchase button. That could save some headaches down the road.

Always try to support your LGS. But I will not pay the some times +$100 inflated prices. Buds Guns, Grabagun, KYGunCo, Impact, and Top Gun Supply are all great choices.

I've only used Bud's and they were fine. I will use online prices to haggle with a lgs and if they can get reasonably close I will buy local. For hard to find guns, gun broker can be a good option but, like ebay, pay attention to feedback and if the seller is verified.

OP have the purchase price plus CC fee if any (usually 3%) , shipping cost, and transfer fee tallied up and maybe your LGS will be able to come closer than you think

Now who has the best site ? I guess that depends on what you're really looking for in a "best site" . Best as in easiest to navigate - there are some much better than others, but all saeem to be pretty intuitive. Best as in they actually have what you are buying in stock? that seems to be most or they'll have a tag stating in stock or not. Best as in Best online price - well that depends on what you are looking for , there is always one or 2 cheaper than the rest for that one particular thing you are looking for. I have used several online sites for purchase and my worst experience was from gun auction - and that was just a longer than usual wait time for shipping. If I'm in the market for something (which seems to be often) I hit one of the few search gun site sites and go from there.

Most importantly when / B4 buying online is finding a good FFL to ship to. Contact a few in your area either by phone or e-mail find out what their transfer fee and policies are b4 you buy any gun online. Some have a $XX per gun charge, some have a flat $XX per visit. Additionally some FFL may actually have something of interest in stock. I have a good relationship with my FFL and have purchased items from him directly and have also ordered items online, when I do make an online purchase as a courtesy I email my FFL for a heads up, they respond same day and again generally a few days later I get an email or call my item arrived, I make an appointment convenient to them for inspection and transfer.

    good luck

I have been in there no fewer than five times, as I live less than a mile from them. Some times alone, some times with my dad, and I think I brought my wife at least once. Every time was the same.

As for my favorite LGS, BGF hands down. I'll copy my experience that I posted a while back:

Went into BGF this evening with a couple of buddies. They are both in wheelchairs, and one was looking to purchase his first pistol. Him and I went to Gander to finger bang some pistols the other day, and were less than impressed (shocker!). I am nowhere near an expert, but I looked like a a certified gunsmith compared to the sales guy at Gander. That coupled with the fact that I couldn't get a recommendation out of him left us feeling like we wasted our time. Flash forward to this afternoon, and it is a completely different story. The older (sorry if you read this) gentleman was helpful, gave a solid recommendations, and knew his freaking stuff. I expected nothing less from BGF, but it is always refreshing to have a good experience from a gun shop.

I've never bought a gun online, not because I haven't been trying, only I could always find the LGS to price match if not beat online prices.

as for gun parts and accessories, online retailers win hands down.

ZX Gun is a big time Springfield dealer, give it a try.
