That is excellent, Scout. If I'm not obligated to help cook on Thursday morning, I might be able to pull together a few things for you.

Other contributions to the FAQ + Answers to help pull this together would be much appreciated. :)

Questions that I see frequently asked so far are:

    1) How do I apply for my LTCH?

    2) What's the difference between an LTCH and a CCW? [Quick answer.. LTCH is a License to Carry Handgun. Concealed or open is not specified. The type of weapon is specified. This is the type of license/permit that Indiana offers to its residents. CCW is a Concealed Carry Weapon (permit). Concealed is specified. The type of weapon is not specified (although it is usually restricted to certain types). Indiana does NOT offer this type of license/permit.

    3) How long does it take to get an LTCH? [Quick answer... It seems to be about 6 weeks right now 11/25/08.]

    4) What the heck IS an LTCH? [Quick answer... See #2.]

    5) Should I get the Lifetime or the 4-year? Personal Protection or Target/Hunting? [Quick answer... Lifetime Personal Protection.]

    6) My [wife/sister/daughter/girlfriend/mom] [is afraid of/hates/won't talk about] guns. What do I do? [Quick answer... Don't expect a reasonable or quick turn to a firearms fanatic. It takes time, often in the category of "years," definitely not overnight. Ask her why she's afraid of guns. Show her yours if she's willing. Talk about why it's important to learn to defend yourself. This is really a very long discussion, but essentially, go slow, keep talking, don't push.]

    7) My [female] [needs/wants] her own gun. What should I get her? [Quick answer... Ask her. It needs to be her decision, not yours and not the shopkeepers. Help her make an informed decision, but it needs to be her decision in the end.]

    8) What the heck is up with this "bacon" thing anyway? [Quick answer... Search for "Food of the Gods." It's Scutter01's fault.]

    9) Where am I allowed to carry in Indiana? [Quick answer... Assuming you have your LTCH...not schools (including churches with preschools), not most government buildings, not most Federal property, not most of Indy City Parks. Yes, you can carry in most state parks. Without your LTCH: Nowhere. IANAL.]

    10) What states have reciprocity with Indiana?

    11) How do I transport a gun across Illinois? [Quick answer... you don't.]

    12) Which is better? Glock, SIG or HK? (All other manufacturers need not apply.) [Quick answer... SIG. But I'm biased. Actually, if you go based on popularity of carry, it's Glock of the 19 variety. /sigh]

    13) What is an NFA item? [Quick answer... Anything that is covered by the National Firearms Act of... some time ago.]

    14) Who is in charge of this place anyway? [Quick answer.. Fenway.]

    15) I heard that the lifetime LTCH won't be available anymore. Is this true? [Quick answer... NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO.]

    16) When can I renew my current license? [Quick answer... Within 180 days of your current license's expiration date and not before.]

    17) My license expired two months ago, but I reapplied for a new license yesterday. Can I still carry my gun? [Quick answer... No.]

    18) What is the best ammo to carry? [Quick answer... the kind that fits in your gun without blowing up your gun.]

    19) Concealed or open carry? [Quick answer.. yes.]

    20) When is the next INGO Get Together? [Quick answer.. probably the next Indy 1500.]

    21) Will INGO have a table at the next 1500? [Quick answer... yes.]

    22) Where can I get one of those super cool INGO hats? [Quick answer.. PM Fenway.]

    23) What does [insert favorite acronym here] mean?

    24) INGO needs a live chat! [Quick answer... NO.]

    25) Can I sell/purchase a gun out of state? [Quick answer... handguns through an FFL only. long guns I will have to look up, but I believe yes, even without an FFL. IANAL.]

    26) I have a gun. What do I carry it in? [Quick answer... a holster. I recommend Raven Concealment Systems :)]

    27) Where do I get training? [Quick answer.. Check out the Tactics & Training forum.]

    28) How do I get involved in USPSA? [Quick answer... PM rhino or obijohn.]

    29) How do I get involved in IDPA? [Quick answer... PM rhino or obijohn.]

    30) How do I get involved in an Appleseed shoot? [Quick answer.. PM techres or hawkhavn.]

    31) What's a good gun shop? [Quick answer... Plainfield Shooting Supply or Bradis or Wyatt's or His & Hers Target Sports. Not Don's Guns.]

    32) Where is a range close to me? [Quick answer... Atterbury, Wilbur Wright, Pop's Guns, Riley Conservation Club, MCFG, HCFG, Martinsville, or Eagle Creek.]

    Well it's a start.

    Don't forget:

"I heard that the lifetime LTCH won't be available anymore. Is this true?"

    and

"when can I renew my current license?"

I wrote a FAQ like this before.
Before You Post... Read ***THE FAQ!*** - Pirate4x4.Com Bulletin Board
I made it clean and organized, it was stickied, but not everyone reads it. I do update it when there is new stuff to add, which isn't often, it's just getting it off the ground that takes the most time. So, I could work on one for here, but I would need topics to put in and links to the better discussions if anyone has them.

Bwaaaahahahahahaaaa!!!!!!! Yeah..... that group is well know amongst the Jeeping community.

Hey guys, I made a new sticky, and split it out into several pages (in case you didn't notice). There are a couple of questions I know have been asked but I'm not 100% sure on the answers on, and a few need relevant post links. If you have any suggestions, new questions, or modifications of answers, please post them here, or PM me. (In other words, this is an open invitation to tell me how stupid I am. Please take advantage of it; it may not happen again.)

Fellow mods, please feel free to edit at your will. :)

Not totally on topic, but I have a stickied and locked thread on GT revolving common acronyms in use in the firearms world. If any of you mods PM me, I would be more then willing to take care of that, and keep it updated.

Is it legal to carry with a loaded chamber

I have thought a similar idea would be great for things like

"Can I get a lifetime even though my 4 year LTCH is 1 year old"
    "Can I carry to ____ w/o a LTCH"
"Can I carry to ____ with a LTCH"
"Is it legal to carry with a loaded chamber"
"How many guns can I buy/carry/transport at one time"
"I am over 18 but under 21, can I carry"
    "Can I carry a rifle"
"Can I carry a loaded rifle"
    "Can I OC"

I know that could quickly turn into an online version of Indiana Handgun Law, and of course much of it is open to debate, which is the great part of this site. With the influx of new members we see these type of questions popping up again. Of course they are necessary, and its good that people find out, but it seems like a sticky could address these things once and for all. Plus, I think that many folks may inadvertently break the law because they are unwilling to ask a "dumb" question, or worse yet, rely on info they got from their hunting buddy's ex wife's cousin who dated this guy who is a cop in Missouri.

So yea, its a great idea. I just haven't brought it up because I am not yet willing to volunteer to do it.

I have been searching the FAQ section and all links associated (i.e.-http://www.in.gov/isp/files/firearms_FAQ_02_08.pdf) but I was not able to find the answer to "Is it legal to carry with a loaded chamber". I can't seem to find any legal literature anywhere and after 4 hours I have decided to just ask. Is there maybe an Indiana brochure or FAQ section I have missed?

The closest I was able to find to an answer is the following, however, there was no source cited. I also realize that if its not covered in the IC, then there would be no source to cite. It just seems like this would be covered in the IC somewhere. Please advise and Thank You in advance.

Here is where some of you seem to be getting confused. You are trying to put FEDERAL laws and STATE laws together.

Federal Law (under interstate commerce) prohibits a LICENSED federal firearms dealer from selling a long gun to persons under the age of 18 and a handgun to persons under the age of 21.

State law prohibits the sale of handguns to anyone under the age of 18.

A 18 y/o Indiana resident can buy (or receive as a gift) a handgun from any Indiana resident.

Don't confuse federal restrictions on dealers, with state restrictions on minors.

    To answer the OP's questions:
1- Cop was 100% correct in selling you a handgun at the age of 18 or older. 100% legal transaction. Dealer at the indy 1500 was 100% incorrect.

2- With a Valid Indiana LTCH you can carry a handgun at 18+.

3- No state law prohibits the carry of a loaded handgun gun (with or without a round in the chamber) with a LTCH. The kid in the police academy is 100% wrong.

Someone on here mentioned "straw purchase". In order for a purchase to qualify as a "straw purchase" the buyer MUST be buying the firearm for a person who is NOT ALLOWED TO OWN said weapon. Thus a wife buying a gun for her husband as a gift is not a "straw purchase" unless her husband is prohibited from owning that gun.

Simply buying a gun for someone else is not, in and of itself, a "straw purchase".

    Hope that clears it up!

Yes, it's legal to carry with one in the pipe. There is no law prohibiting it and there would be no point in covering it in the IC just to mention that it's legal.
