There are buttons for that you know. I presume you're on a floor higher than the elevator. So when you're standing outside the elevator, you'll find a panel with a couple of buttons on it. They'll typically have arrows pointing up or down. Push either one, depending on whether you want to go up or down, and it will call the elevator to bring it to the floor you're on.
