Jeb Bush might just be the most out of touch candidate there is right now. Just work longer hours! Your family and other obligations are just secondary. Sick? Need a personal day? Vacation? Tough, you're not doing your part. Doesn't this idiot understand the principle of diminishing returns? Does he know what a salary means? Salary workers are paid the same no matter how much they work.

Arbeit macht frei, according to Jeb.

Second thought: not everyone can walk into their work and ask for more hours. I would think some businesses can't afford the overtime.

Yesterday I visited with an old friend who now lives in Florida. He was very positive on Bush saying he did an excellent job as governor down there. Just one guys opinion, but my friend watches politics very closely. We'll see all kinds of demonization from the left. IMO the subject quote could mean several things. I'd like an elaboration from him. Have we not had many workers get their hours cut as a result of the current administration?

It is explained in the article.

I watched a news blip about this this morning and in it he was stating that in order to increase both productivity for companies and disposable income for families is for workers who are only getting 30 hours a week and getting them to the 40 hour work week which then if they were able to get overtime would allow them to get time and a half.

a comment that the Bush campaign argues was a reference to underemployed part-time workers but which Democrats are already using to attack him.

To me sounds exactly what people and companys need to get back to but there are a lot of citizens that want "money for nothing and their chicks for free" :D

Based on a lot of wage and benefits laws right now, there are a lot of advantages for employers to limit hours to "part time." In some cases they don't have to pay full benefits to part time help, an also don't have to contribute to a 401k, etc. The thinking is that if I need 48 man hours of work a week, it is overall less expensive for me to hire 3 people at 16 hours each or 2 at 24hrs each on straight time w/o benefits than it is to have 1 person at 48 hours with over time + benefits.

The opposite is typically true of salaried positions. Employees are paid for 40hrs no matter if they work 30 or 60 hours a week. The interesting thing is that while we all like to gripe and moan about working too much, generally speaking the salaried folks aren't working the longer hours because they are forced, it is because they are committed to the task. Yes, many do have a workload of more than 40 hours, but I have worked with folks that would turn 30 hours a week into 60 hours just because that is they way they are.

It is going to be interesting to see how we (as a society) go about solving this issue.

If you don't think you have enough money, you have 2 options:

    #1 Use less.

    #2 Get more.

Oh, I forgot, option 3....get the gvt. to give you someone else's.

Oh, he wasn't touchy feely patting people on the head and telling them it's not their fault. Crucify him.

If he were talking to a particular family/individual, struggling to pay bills, I would say "work more hours" is solid advice. But he was discussing the struggling American economy in its entirety. Instead of the obvious answer of slashing federal spending and the business-crushing bureaucracies, his plan seems to be that the working stiffs should put in more hours in order to sustain the parasitic government.

What's that expression? "Work harder: Millions on welfare are depending on you."

He could start by campaigning against his brother's enormous pharmaceutical giveaway plan.

And raise the retirement age, while we're at it.

    Seriously. It needs done.

We live longer than we did...It makes sense...

Cue ads with Republicans pushing old people in wheelchairs off of cliffs.....

Good to see Bush Derangement Syndrome making a come back though...It's been years since I have seen the sheeple so quick to say "Bush is so out of touch..."(as compared to the Obama's, Clinton's, Kennedy's, Kerry's, etc...Who are all really "in touch" being as how they are so poor and all.)

I would prefer to retire this afternoon, with a government-sponsored pension equal to 1100% of my current income, courtesy of the rest of you taxpayers.

    Make it happen.

The life expectancy at age 65 (which id what really matters, not the life expectancy at birth) is about 5 years longer now than in 1940. Raising the retirement age from 65 to 70 for Social Security (which, I believe is already the plan...eventually) would get us back to the number of years, per person that was originally planned.

However, the real issue (besides this being a socialist, generational redistribution of wealth) is the number of active worker for every retiree. Raising the retirement age would improve that ratio as well.
