Seemed like they always had them at Stuckey's in the gift shop (which we'd always stop at on family vacations).

close friends of my mom's lived in Asheville, SC. We visited them every couple years. Every time the husband had something interesting for me to keep me occupied while the grown ups talked. One year it was the gee-haw wimmy diddle, one year it was a bb-gun w/ 2-liter bottles hung in the trees for targets.... so mine has a special connection for me to Appalachia... that was ~30 yrs ago so it's getting kinda worn.

    need to make another sometime!

fun trying to show my kids now to make it go and change directions.

I look at people now, telling me how poor they are.
Their family has 3 cars, 5 TVs, a cell phone for everyone, a desktop PC, a laptop or 2, a couple tablets, etc.

I grew up we had ONE car, ONE TV, no cell phones, one house phone, no computers or tablets.
We played with bats, dirt, and toy guns.

And it never entered your mind that you were poor, because you were not.

That used to be all that was necessary. You knew your parents loved you because they stayed together through thick and thin, taught you right from wrong and beat the snot out you when you did wrong.

    When you did right...

that is what is expected, what do you want a medal? (currently known as a participation trophy)

And it never entered your mind that you were poor, because you were not.

    You were indeed blessed.

I had nowhere to live but an old Nash Rambler
Very little food unless school was in-session(hated summer = no food)
Went dumpster diving behind Bargain Center for clothes
Dad was deployed in Vietnam before he was killed in Saigon on 31Jul72.
We knew we were poor but too stupid to not be happy. Those hard times fueled my tenacity for life.

Pregnant used to be a bad word.

People used to stop at stop signs.

The cafeteria had a bowl to leave your money in.

Nurses wore funny hats and white shoes.

Police wore funny hats and carried revolvers. And had gum machines on the cars.

Every gas station had a couple garages and a tow truck.

And an air-hose that was free to use.

As a kid, I thought the Attendant at our corner gas station was the richest man in the neighborhood, 'cause he always had that big wad of bills in his pocket and that chrome coin dispenser on his belt.

We have several of them up here that still have hoses on the side.

Wearing old socks on your hands cause you were so poor you couldn't afford gloves or mittens.
Sledding down a hill on a waxed cardboard Maytag box in the winter.
Walking the alleys looking for soda or Home juice bottles to get the deposit.
Butchering chickens in-town to freeze for real noodles made by hand drying on old newspaper or dumplings made from scratch.
Making pickles, kimchee and sauerkraut in old crocks to be put in the root cellar.

Dont know if it’s been mentioned yet, putting bread bags on our feet between our socks and our shoes when we played in the snow.

Not that I've seen. Cruising Wabash Avenue in Terre Haute and parking in the K-Mart lot near the road used to be the thing kids did in that town. Now there are zero signs of any such activity.
On the south side of Indy we cruised up and down “the strip” between the White Castle on the south end to the Tee-Pee on the north end, over and over getting in races and “picking up chicks”.
