Big fan of the eclipse here.

I have had the day off since the first of the year. I did fill up the tank of both vehicles today and Friday. (Bad thing is I need gas for the lawn mower so I am off the the station in the am) we need nothing from the store we will stop garden/lawn work at 2 ish watch the totality and then back to work.

I have cabbage potatoes carrots to plant. I have the whole yard to mow (will put the wife on this.

I need to check my batteries. Lol
So, does anyone know for sure if auto darkening helmets are safe?
If there’s no spark bright enough to darken it I think it could be big trouble.

I have a few helmets with sensitivity adjustment and regular sunlight *might* trigger them on high.

If you can lock it on dark that might work but that’s not how mine work…

I was playing with mine yesterday it is auto darken and my cheap LEDs in garage wouldn't turn it but as soon as i looked toward sun it worked. Mine hood goes to shade 13 and they say you need 14 and I am a little concerned about when it gets to 90-95 is it going to stay dark? Anybody with experience have input?

Coming back from visiting our son and daughter in law in Illinois, towards mid afternoon. Traffic on 74 east was heavier than normal

Need it set to 14 minimum. I'll leave my helmets in the garage and shed. I will stick with certified sun lenses. I've been a sound man and a welder. I'm protecting my senses.
The glasses I’ve seen are definitely darker than a number 12 lens welding helmets I have. Not sure I can make them go to 14 and stay there. I’m not taking a chance.

Lucky for me I can just stay home and watch it from my own yard.
I stacked an extra 9 shade on the 10 shade I already have in my welding mask, as I'd rather use protection I know what it is, rather than trust the low cost sunglasses that may or may not meet spec.
Everything I find says to use at least a 14 shade if using a welding mask.
If I choose to, I can see it from my yard too.
Regarding the welding helmet, I was wondering ... Mine is one of those auto-darken ones. I will have to see what it's highest setting is. I have two helmets. I guess I could pull the glass out of one and place it over the auto-darken helmet?

EDIT: My auto-darken welding helmet goes to 14. I'm good.
