They are both great choices. If given the choice I would start with the 1911 especially if you already have a ruger. The 1911 is a true American icon and there are tons of accessories available but the bottom line is they are a pleasure to shoot. This is one of my favorite pistols to take to the range. If you have $1,000 don't pass up the 1911 I don't think you will be sorry about the choice.

I had a 92 and my son had a 92. We couldn't get either one to run consistently, also horrible accuracy. We shoot USPSA a lot of rounds downrange. Always heard if you want to see if a gun will run go compete with it..
Go with the 1911 and don't look back!

I shot expert with an M9 that had well over 20k rounds through it. I'd think a 92 can be accurate. I'm not any kind of great shot, I promise you.

There are so many great pistols out there, it would be hard to choose. For carry, I really like my H&K P2000 with LEM trigger. But I like 1911's, Sigs, CZ's, Springfield, FN, etc. Beretta 92 wouldn't be on my list, although the PX4 shoots soft and accurately…...

My $0.02. There are certain firearms that I think any enthusiast should own. One of them is certainly a 1911. That would be my suggestion.

What I am really thinking about...I see you have over 2700 posts. I would assume that you know a fair amount about these 2 pistols and others. Why don't you get the one you want the most 1st?

    For $1000, get both. J&G has police trade-in Beretta 92F's for $369.

Beretta 92F Semi Auto Pistol, 9mm, 4.9" Barrel, Black Finish, G-VG, Used.

That least you $600 for a decent 1911 (you can get used Springfield GIs for that). Or pony up a few hundred more and get a more top of the line 1911.

I bought an Indiana State Police trade-in Beretta back in the late 90's and it's still one of my favorite pistols to shoot.

I had a 92G many years ago for a duty weapon. I felt that the pistol was too big for the round, and the grip circumference was a bit too large for my hands. I carry a 1911 now, love it, carry an Officer's ACP for off duty.

1911, Sig 226, 92fs, all great guns. I picked up an 80's Springfield government 1911 for around $500, an Italian 92fs for around the same and a sig 226 for much more but it was a MK25. I have seen the sigs used in the $600 range. Looked around and picked up a very nice Kimber CDPII Pro for under $800.

The Springfield came before the others but which would I pick now for a first? That really depends on what you plan on using it for. Picking up an expensive 1911 then you might hate to carry it in case you mark it up, and you will mark it up eventually. The easiest of all of those of mine to carry is the Kimber due to it's aluminum frame and narrow width. It is also the sexiest. The Beretta is big and heavy and so is the Sig. The Sig is probably more reliable but the least pleasing looking of the bunch. Like my women, I like good looking guns but if reliability is a concern, get a Glock or a Sig.

First, I suggest you get what you think looks the best. You will be happy with it and more likely to get a lesser looking gun later if you find you either don't want to mark it up or find it is not the greatest gun for what you use it for.

Between the 1911 and the 92fs, if I had to make a decision for a first, it would probably be the 92fs. Why? Well, depending on the 1911 you chose, it can be a great gun or problematic. The 92fs is a 92fs and is pretty consistent in reliability.
