I was shooting steel plates at Nappanee CC this evening. I had just finished my six plates when I felt my ring on my left hand get hit by something with a good amount of force. It was right after the gal next to me hit a plate. It felt like somebody threw a nickel at me with a decent amount of force. There was some blood on my knuckle. I lookednonnthe ground for the drag that hit me. Nothing. (It wasearly and the ground was fairly clear.)

When I got back to the bench, I wiped the blood away and noticed something in the skin. It was a very small piece of lead, absinthe size of 3 grains of sand. I used my Kershaw to get it out. No pain and very little blood. I could see the angle that it broke the skin at.

After a little time thinking about it while loading my mags, the amount force that tiny piece of lead had was amazing.

I've taken a hit to my safety glasses after hitting "bullet proof" glass from a distance of 30ft. Scared the crap out of me!

How close were you? I recall reading that the minimum distance for shooting steel is about 7yds.

Glad you were able to get it out and nothing worse happened. I was hitting a punch with a hammer about 20 years ago when a piece of the chisel shot off in my little finger. It festered up after a couple days so I went to the company nurse. She sent me to hand specialist for x-rays. They wouldn't touch it. They said to leave it there that a lot of maintenance workers have metal in their hands. I went back to the nurse and said I want it out. She sent me to a small town Doctor. He cut that pinky open took out the piece of the chisel and sewed me up.

There are 4 racks. Racks 1 and 2 are 9 inches (I think) for center fire. 3 and 4 are 5 inch (I think) for rimfire. This setup lets .22's go against the bigger guns. All the plates are 1/2" ar500.

I was on lane 1 and the gal was on lane 2.

    (I'm not in the video)

I was doing controlled pair drills with a mark III on a hanging steel plate few years back. First round must of shifted the plate good enough because a piece of the second came back and hit the left muff of my hearing protection. Took that ear muff clear off my ear, but didn't penetrate it.

Was about 20 feet from the target.

Definitely a "Need new pair of drawers" moment :):

I had a piece of 000 buck comeback and knock the glasses off my face. After everybody stopped laughing at how fake it looked we decided no more steel for the day. I have also had a .22 cut my leg open from 25yds. And I have buddy with a belly full of ricocheted birdshot because he is an idiot.

Ever watch Swamp People? Shooting Gators at close range get shrapnel pretty often. One boy, Willie, after getting shot last year told his dad he wasn't hunting with him again. "I'm tired of being shot and pulling lead out of me. You've shot me at least once every year and I'm tired of it!" (Or words to that effect.) One guy got hit beside his eye in the latest episode. Gator scales bounce bullets like steel, and the soft spot is no bigger than a quarter.

Being young and dumb, I caught one in my thigh back when I was about 8-9. I dug it out and when the folks saw my pants and leg, I swore it was barbed wire and I got tangled in it. They would have taken my pistol away!

BTW, if you never watched the show, a young girl, Jessica, is always OC's a 38. Looks to be about 16. When I was a child in NC, I don't think I knew any girl over 9-10 years old that didn't OC, or CC.

Lost the driver's side window of a truck the same way. Had it parked right behind me working lead on home-made steel. Eyes and Ears - always - and park the truck a good ways from the steel. lol.

I've never received shrapnel from a bullet, but I've heard a round of 7.62x54r wiz by my head after shooting a steel tire rim. That was the last round of the day.

I used my Kershaw to get it out. No pain and very little blood.

Please tell us you used a Zippo lighter to sterilize the blade followed by pouring rot gut whiskey on it at which point you looked at some fair maiden and said, "Give me that dirty bandanna and that stick." At which point you put the stick in your mouth and with a grimace (slight) carved the lead out of your hand, wrapped the wound with the bandana and took a long pull on the whiskey bottle...You then looked at the fair maiden and said, "Well the shootin' is done for the day because I took that pull on the whiskey...Now how about you and I go get a Steak dinner...I am hungry and need to replace that blood I lossed..."

    Was it like that??????:):
