Ok that was interesting! Now explain to me why it works?That is a pretty dramatic effect if you can focus on the cross.

My bet would be because, focusing on the center between them, your eyes peripherally catch the upper half of one face and the lower half of the opposite one. If they choose faces where one has a prominent chin and the other has large eyes, your brain blends the two together to make aliens.


Or something like that... I don't know, I'm just offering a SWAG (Scientific Wild-Ass Guess)
