And most of them are due to unions, public safety and local politicians spending like they've got an endless supply of money. They got drunk off the housing boom and let unions dictate what would happen to the funds, in many cases, when they were on the upswing. When the housing boom went bust, the money dried up and now they're stuck with overpaid government leaches and debt out their asses. Things are just going to get worse there, and in other places that let themselves get caught in similar binds. Too much government and too many government workers. It's always a recipe for disaster.

2001 I was in gun school with members of federal law enforcement who were in the business of planning and research. They stated that the USA would see trouble when government, starting at the local and state level, had to raise the tax rates to pay for the ever expanding Welfare State.

Their conclusion was that no populace could sustain the 85 to 90% taxes that government needs to pay for all the treats it has promised (in 2001 terms). Since city and state governments cannot use the printing press they will be forced to confiscate property, touching off South America style troubles (Ken Hackathorn told me this would happen), or bread riots when people do not get their treats.

We'll see what happends but every time I read about California I think back to the class in Missouri and how prescient it was.:n00b:

Perhaps. But, in California's case the welfare recipients are those cops you talked to and their fellow civil "servants". They, and their platinum parachutes are bankrupting the municipalities and the state. Not the welfare crowd, (altho they're not helping matter any).

I definitely include the treats to the servants of the Welfare State as part of the Welfare State.

I don't take issue with most of what you said, but that prediction wasn't "prescient", it was making use of a knowledge of history.

Not sure about the second part. Californias various entitlements make them very attractive to the welfare crowd. That is why they have about 1/3 of all welfare receipients in the US, but the state has less than 1/8th of the US population. In a related measure, 3.8% of Californias population is on welfare while no other state is over 3%.

The municipalities are the ones declaring bankruptcy, not the state. Last time I checked the cities didn't pay out welfare checks. That came from the state. As I said, they're not helping matters, but it's the civil service and public sector unions that are causing these bankruptcies, among the various causes. The welfare recipients are drawing down the state coffers, but they're not on the verge of bankruptcy, yet.

Like with any disease...the weakest succomb first. California is quite sick and I think you're acknowledging that. They may have some time to stem this ailment but I dont think they have the will power. That medicine must not taste very good, judging by the bucking and snorting of the union reactions.

Nope. From the top to the bottom they're all in denial and refuse to do what will become necessary. It's worse at the state level, since they're really controlled by the public service unions. They'll never be allowed to get that monster under control. All the pols are in fear of them.

We should all be afraid. The supreme court has already said it's ok for local/state governments to take property for almost any "public" use. It's going to be interesting to see the lashing out the states do as they stroke out.

My concern with the socialist states like CA and IL going under is that the Great Socialist in Washington will bail them out with our money. A few weeks ago the feds gave the Chicago cops $500,000,000. Sorry, no link, it was on WLS radio,

"If thy foot offend thee, cut it off." That is logical.

Many states are starting to offend.

If my foot was possessed like Ash's hand, I would probably cut it off.

It will be interesting to see. In simplest terms, when you go bankrupt, your assets are essentially sold or siezed to settle your debts. Will be interesting how that would pan out for a State. Would private companies come in and gobble up said assets? Would the creditors (the citizens of the state) gain owernship of any of them?
