Politicians do what their voters want, as a rule, or at least pretend or do their best to convince that they do. If some shadowy organization, say the CIA, went about, successfully, convincing your voters that a politician committed the unpardonable political sin, you will be forced to do what your voters have been convinced needs doing, or you might lose your seat.

Also, 535 politicians can be controlled more easily than a couple hundred million people. So there's that.

I was talking about the Watergate stuff.
