Could be. But the two folks that mentioned it to me were gun guys. One a Pastor who carried for years. The other a Deacon who also carries (but not at church anymore) he is an avid shooter who reloads thousands of rounds a month/week, he even carries a press and supplies and sets up in his hotel room. He travels all over the world for work and shoots every week (day if he can). When the drought hit a few years back, he told me he had just purchased 300,000 primers of various sizes.

I'm going to take a wild guess that someone in the organization told you that as an excuse instead of telling you that they personally don't like guns. I've reviewed dozens of insurance policies for our church over the years, it's never come up even once.

It could be an insurance agent who claims that it's a "best practice" to prohibit guns, but I too have never seen it as part of a policy.

I feel like soft targets are more appealing to today's radical, homegrown terrorists and for that reason I carry everywhere I can to at least hope I have a chance.

Even states where the signs have the force of law, if the penalty is only an infraction then I don't worry much about it. Sure it is actually illegal, but if it's no different than a speeding ticket then I will weight the penalty against the benefit and factor in the odds that my CC gun will never be noticed unless I actually have to use it and walk right in with it. The CCW app for android and the handgun law sights many times give a link to the law, and when read it will usually be a small penalty.

The insurance company that carries our church's policy told us the same thing. They wanted us to have a formal "No Guns" policy. The only exceptions would be for a security detail, which we don't have, and then only after they received training approved by the insurance company. The church would have saved several thousand dollars a year in premiums if we had gone that route.

An insurance company has no legal standing to disallow anything. They can either drop your coverage or take away a discount. Either way, get a new insurance company.

...or deny coverage if something bad happens, leading to the possible bankruptcy of the church, assuming the "no guns" thing is an exclusion under the policy.

But personally, I've never seen any such exclusion in any liability policy and i used to handle coverage and defense for one of the larger insurers of churchs in the midwest.
