So, I went out for my morning walk this morning, 5 degrees....but I have walked at this and lower temps before.

What I have never experienced before is that after walking about 400 yards, I got a static shock to both ears, I assume from my hood. Then I got a static shock to both ears about every 50 yards thereafter. Just painful enough to be unpleasant.

I'm starting to suspect unusually dry air and more nylon than the past.

    "Severe Windchill Factor"
It's just too easy these days:

Eagle Lake Elementary, Edwardsburg, Michigan circa 1978: "the wind chill's going to be 30 below...should we cancel school?"

"For cold temperatures? We're going to need those snow days for when we get 3 feet of snow and we physically can't get the school doors open. Tell you what, they can play board games in their classrooms for recess."

This closing schools thing is either a relatively recent phenomenon or an Indiana thing. I can probably count on one hand the number of times growing up in IL(South Holland) my schools closed for cold or snow. It had to be Jedi's feets and feets of snow or a daytime high below before the wind chill.

Yeah the technology they have for just clothing in the past 20 year or so is insane. I had coats stuffed with a bunch of feathers or synthetic fluff when I was a kid but now they have stuff almost as thin as a typical hoodie that will keep you just as warm.

I never got to ride a school bus. Elementary school was nearly a mile away and high school a mile and a half. Walked to elementary school every day and high school most days until I started driving. My mom was a teacher and had to get to her own job.
