The note below was just sent to the IND airport authority and to Continental Airlines. I am sitting at IND waiting for a flight right now...
    <begin letter>

As I write this, I am sitting in the IND airport. I'm just your average looking 44 year old business guy catching a flight to Houston. I commute pretty much every week to Houston. For the past year I have been flying out of SDF. I had heard the ruckus about the screening, but had not seen these new procedures for myself until today. I just went through the line and found out for myself why people are upset.

As a VERY frequent flier, I have the "normal" security stuff down cold... until now. This time it's remove belt, wallet, EVERYTHING. Not only did I go through the millimeter wave machine but after that, they decided to give me a frisking as well. The officer was doing his best to be professional and reading from the script. I assured him it was ok and just to get on with it. I was respectful and kept my opinions to myself. That said, there is NO way that I would want my family going through this kind of search - especially in the absence of reasonable cause. The frisking that I received would have been considered groping and molestation in any court in the country. It is my opinion that in the absence of evidence that would indicate greater caution - the security measures that are being used are WAY over the top. Name me one other business where customers get subjected to this intrusive of a search with zero cause! If there was cause to believe me a likely threat - then fine - please search me in great detail! But in the absence this evidence, there is NO reason for the over the top practices that TSA is using.

People may argue about the Constitutionality of the search. I am not a Constitutional scholar and I won't go there. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. The bottom line is that this is NO way to treat your customers! As someone who is on these planes a LOT, I have an interest in a safe flight. I am totally ok with REASONABLE screening. This is NOT REASONABLE!

That said, I believe in the power of the marketplace. My frequent flier number is listed below. From now forward I will NOT book flights out of IND until these policies are revised. Perhaps Contintental/ IND / etc. will listen to their customers. Perhaps not. I will book all future flights out of SDF, in spite of my preference for the larger planes that use IND. In the future, should SDF go to these procedures, I will find an alternative means of transportation.

You as an airport have the right to opt out of the TSA screening system. I heartily encourage you to do so. I am opting out of using your airport until this happens.

    Respectfully,
    [ArmedProgrammer]

:+1: I know not every one will see it, but that was a brave thing to do. We need more people writing letters like this.

Yep, My wife and I usually take a little weekend trip for our vacations, anniversaries and her birthdays. I'll be sending a letter to our usual airline (Frontier) as to why we are choosing to rent a car instead of flying for our getaways, every time we do one until this TSA madness is repealed.

Excellent work AP! Your letter is very well written and explains your displeasure without coming across like a ranting lunatic.

I think it is sad how our government officials can't seem to think beyond what is right in front of them. People can only be pushed so far. The economy, inflation, unemployment, terrorism, our rights being infringed upon daily and with a very casual attitude, and so on...

We are fighting a war on terrorism. Doesn't this kind of action by the government breed future terrorist like behavior domestically? I'm not advocating it, it's just baffles me how reactive the government is instead of being forward thinking.

People will only be pushed so far before they start pushing back. Right now, I get the feeling a lot of people are at the breaking point.

Thanks again AP for stepping up with this letter. I hope more like you are out there.

OP even if IND outs out of using TSA and either a) does the security checking in-house (ie. they hire people and pay them) or out sources the security process THEY (IND's security) MUST STILL FOLLOW TSA GUIDELINES. So IND's security will still "touch you" and make you do all the non-sence that TSA makes you do now.

So there is no incentive for INDY AIRPORT to get rid of TSA. Besides from biz's point of view it's crazy. TSA is providing the INDY AIRPORT with FREE security. Otherwise they woudl have to pay for it themseleves. Not good for their bottom line.

As for your letter. Well said and written but in the end meaningless. The number of "sheep" out number the number of people that are mad about this so sure airports may take a little loss but they will remain profitable and so long as the sheep continue to fly then it's pointless.

Suspect you would need a full week of no one flying (everyone in the nation opting out) before the airports and the airlines go kicking and screaming to congress to get rid of TSA.

I think ATOMonkey was referring to an airport not following the TSA guidelines. In which case I would suspect either
    a) the airport is shut down or
    b) the .gov takes over the function of security since the airport is not following the guidelines.

We have such cases at the state level do we not?
For example City of East Chicago's high school is on it's 5th year of academic probation for failing to have it's students pass the ISTEP. The state has informed teh city that next year it will be taking over the running of the high school unless they can improve (ie. pass their students on the ISTEP). Otherwise state takes over since the only other option was to close the school for not meeting the guidelines but then what would you do with the students.

My understanding is that it is a fine of around $10,000, and you walk away in handcuffs. Once you are in the security screening line, you are committed to going through the process.

Yes if we are talking about a passenger. Their is some type of fine and arrestment. You incurr the fine if you step onto the airport property and choose not to go thru security. Even if you step off at the sidewalk where you pick/up/drop off people.

What you do is take several doses of Viagra. Then when it's your turn to be searched, they'll find that you are quite the handful. ;)

    Cite please.

Sry I can't. :( That is what I read on a Yahoo News! article in which the reporter stated that it was TSA guidelines and part of your "contract" when you buy an airplane ticket.

I'm not sure how one can find/see/look up the TSA guidelines. Note that to day no one has been fined for not going thru security. Even though a few have been arrested for it. Actauly arrested for causing a scene more than for "not going thru security".

The US really needs to follow the lead of Israel. They do not have any such screening and almost 99.9% of their flights are international. As they point out, they are not looking for weapons, but rather they are looking for terrorists.

Thanks to all for the kind words... that said, it is really a very simple equation.

    1) By virtue of what I do for a living I have to spend a travel budget of 15-20k per year.
    2) I have the good fortune to be able to direct it as I please, so long as it gets the job done.
    3) I'd really rather not get groped for the privilege of spending that money at any one particular airport or airline.

So.... to the degree I can, I make it count. And I don't mind telling people why they do (or DON'T) get my business.

I have to admit that the stark difference between the Louisville airport and the "enhanced" TSA experience at Indy was a huge eye opener for me, and I literally see airport security every week. I would encourage ANY of you in the South who need to fly to use SDF instead of IND. It's THAT different....

For the record, as a frequent flier, I agree with RR's point above. The Israeli's are the world's biggest terrorist target and they seem to manage just fine. Learning from them on the topic would seem to me to be a good idea.
