What did he "think" would happen?

The law is prima fascia unconstitutional, which is what the court so ruled in his favor. He should have thought that he had the perfect right to do what he did, which he did have the right.

I'm trying to figure out how this went down. Did the officers simply arrest the guy out of the blue, or did the judge want him arrested? On one hand, if the judge ordered the arrest, then I think there's no issue, if it was done due to being in comtemt, but it doesn't appear that was the case, as the judge has recused himself.

When the ticket came in with payment, a clerk showed it to the judge who instructed the clerk to refuse the payment. Judge then ordered the guy to appear in court. When guy shows up for court, cops arrest him.

He was never found in contempt.

At least not in the judicial sense. Contempt of crook/dumbass is an entirely different issue!

First there's stupid, then there's this guy.

What he did is the same as if he would have said this in court.

Have a inappropriate outburst and face the consequences.

There is a time, place and manner, at how, when and what you can/may say or do something.

Maybe they should have just cashed his check and cut their gains. Instead, they felt the need to humiliate him. They've sown the wind, now they get to reap the whirlwind.

if you stood up in court and said that, I would hope you would at least be fined, I would not feel bad if you spent a night in jail

The judge who overturned his conviction on 1st Amendment rights disagreed with you in every sense of the word.
