The Scarlet Tanagers here seem to hit the bird seed and suet mostly. I'm not sure I have seen them at the jelly or oranges so much. The Grosbeaks are enjoying the jelly, and I have a million orioles this year....more than I can count. I bought more jelly and another bag of oranges. We are almost through the fifth big jar of jelly since the beginning of last week and I am giving them two oranges a day.

What kind of jelly do you buy? I'm considering doing the fruit and jelly on a seperate platform feeder. Need to start planting now that its a little warmer for hummingbirds and butterflies (won't be big enough for this year but next)

Cheap grape jelly. We are going through a pudding cup a day (my wife broke the glass cup that came with the feeder. We have friends in town that are going through a jar of jelly every few days.

Saw one in a redbud tree today for about 10 minutes before taking a look at my feeder and zooming away. Ants got in the feeder and have a layer of them floating on the top. Does anyone know if the ants spoil the feed? How do you guys keep the ants out?

I have goofed. It is not Scarlet Tanagers that I am seeing but Summer Tanagers. I was just looking out again and the female was out there as well, olive/yellowish which caused me to pull out the book again to check. The Scarlet has black wings and what I have here does not.
And had to put out another block of suet. Hungry buggers.

I had never seen a summer tanager until this year. See scarlet tanagers occasionally.

I keep track of the birds I see and have added at least 6 new ones this year, which is the most in quite a few years.

My sugar water seems to be going cloudy sooner than I remember from last year. How often does everyone else's need changed out? I mix up one part sugar to four parts water(boiled).
