Well at the store they were asking $40.00 a box for fmj ! Just checked some online stores looks like they range 23 to 27 a box for fmj.

That still seems steep! 9mm May more in my frugal price range.
Don't forget that online may be cheaper but you have to figure tax and shipping. So it could be closer in price than you think.

To me 9mm in a 1911 is just wasted steel. Most buy a 9mm 1911 because they can't handle it in 45acp. I've never been impressed with a 9mm. A 10mm will do everthing and a whole lot more than a 9mm. Some say the 9mm is as good as a 45acp, I totally disagree with that but, there is no comparison between a 9mm and the 10mm.
Get the 10mm, you won't regret it.

    I have the 9mm Specialist 5". You won't have buyer's remorse. It's everything beautiful about a 1911 with the economy of 9mm.

I'm as much a 45ACP purist as any 1911 lover, but this setup is like a squirt gun. And silly accurate not to mention (for me) 100% reliable.

Note: current DW Specialist models do not support 9mm in the Commander configuration. It's gov't only. If you want commander, you need to go 45ACP.

Man, that is really nice! I hate reading these threads! I am perfectly happy with my Range Officer 9mm. This could move me to make a change but I will stay strong! :)

If I wasn't so frugal and didn't hold such a strong bent towards standardization, I'd get the 10 mm. I think it would be fun and like others have said a bit better if you encounter large 4-legged adversaries.

I am down to two centerfire pistol calibers now and like it that way. I can work up one 9mm load that will work well in four 9 mm firearms.

The whole 9mm, 45, 10mm, 38 Super argument is silly. I have had people refuse to shoot my 1911 in 9mm because it was a 9mm. That's fine by me. I have many reasons why, after owning four 1911's in .45, that I went with 9mm. I'm happy to shoot it myself if others don't want to.

Though I have never encountered someone say they didn't like it once they opened their mindset a touch and tried it. I have actually "sold" several of them just but letting folks try it.

I was at the forefront of the 9mm 1911 wave and happy to say I started it, lol. :)

So today we made our every so often trip to Sam‘s Club, I have the bright idea let’s stop by the lgs to check their class schedule for Tennessee Permit class, yes they are old school No on line schedule or sign up. Well we confirmed that they offer a one day class and they do not have a minimum age.

Great now here comes the problem. I take a glance over the display case and there it is a Dan Wesson specialist In 10mm. So I figured why not at least handle it. Very impressive so now I want one. Only question is to go for 10mm or the more affordable option of 9mm

    Thoughts?
I see a lot more people buying 10mm today. I don't know if this is consistent across the board, but the firearms store I work at has been selling them left and right.

Well, we have seen .40 drop off in popularity lately. Maybe those guys are moving to 10mm? If I was looking at both, I would lean towards the 10 mm just because it's faster and a 180 grain projectile would be fun.

If I understand correctly, the .40 was born from the 10 mm due to officers not liking the recoil of the 10 mm. Does this sound right?

Plus, right now LPP are sorta available while SPP are not. That could move some to the 10.

If I was just going to have something to shoot at the range and take in the woods, like I mentioned the 10 mm would be my choice.

If I was going to compete in the action shooting sports, I would not shoot a 10 mm!

Yes. The FBI found that regular 10mm was too much for the pussies officers so they downloaded it to "10mm Lite". This of course did not need all that case volume so 40 S&W was born with a shorter case that duplicated the downloaded 10mm round.

Time for some more inspiration to the OP for the long-slide DW's (though not the model you're pining for). I imagine in some pistols, the 10mm recoil might not be comfortable for extended sessions, but the long-slide models smooth it out somehow. I had to get a little more grip, and the Hogue rubbers made it feel real nice:
