Greatest Depression in California: People Begin Living Without Electricity and Water

I couldn’t find statistics for local utility shut offs in my area, but I knew we would start to see more and more of this.
Houses everywhere are going vacant. People don’t say goodbye, they don’t leave a number, they just disappear. With their disappearance we add another vacant house to the street. But families living in housing without utilities is a new sight for me to behold. I spoke recently with a rep from So Cal Edison who, full time contacts residence who have had their electricity turned off due to non payment. She has a negotiator sent in and they work on a reduced payment. It’s amazing to me, that now, it is becoming acceptable in California to camp out in your home.
People are losing their homes, losing their cars and losing their dignity. How are we going to afford kids clothes and school supplies for the coming year? How can we expect families to pay for all these additional costs when the economy is in the shape it in. I ask myself this everyday.

Requests for help paying utility bills surge upward
Light switches, furnaces and water faucets aren’t the typical gauges of economic health, but at Pikes Peak United Way’s 2-1-1 call center, they tell a tale of people who continue to struggle to pay their bills in a weak economy.

According to a report released Monday by the 2-1-1 Information and Referral Hotline, requests for utility bill assistance in the fiscal year ending June 30 jumped 20 percent from the previous year, outstripping requests for help with food and rent.
“That’s by far the biggest spike in looking at data year-to-year,” said 2-1-1 Center Manager Jessica Johnson-Simmons. “I would guess it would have something to do with recent utility hikes that have gone into effect, but it’s also a case of clients just getting too overwhelmed with their…

I feel horrible; I know my kids must feel horrible,” said Maria Schultheis, who lives in the house with her husband and twin teenage sons. “I’m humiliated because I never had to live like this.”
The town water department shut off the Schultheises’ water about a month ago after the family fell behind on payments on a $1,700 overdue bill. John Schultheis — a computer programmer who has been out of work for three years — watched in disbelief as town workers turned off the water valve near the curb of his three-bedroom bungalow in a quiet middle-class neighborhood in the Lake Hiawatha section of Parsippany.
As the recession continues, utility companies say a growing number of New Jerseyans are falling behind on their electric, gas and water bills. For many, a flood of emergency funding in state and federal aid programs — coupled with a state-imposed moratorium on utility shut-offs during the winter months — has helped keep the lights on and the water flowing over the last few months.
But, with much of the state money gone and the winter moratorium ended, utility officials say more and more families like the Schultheises may be losing their electricity, gas or water service in the coming months.
“I do expect shut-off activity to increase the second part of the year,” said Victor Viscomi, PSE&G’s director of billing and revenue operations. “Some of the emergency-payment assistance money is drying up.”
PSE&G, the state’s largest utility, has seen a 10 percent increase in families behind on their payments, compared with this time last year, Viscomi said. Many of those are households that had never had a late payment until now.

Very sad and unfortunate... Especially in Cali. Should teach the jerks for adopting degenerancy and communism one would think.

Im curious if Indiana could face problems similar in the near future.

While it would suck to have water and electric shut off, at least they've got the shelter. This would make a good topic in the Survival and Preparedness section, and how the day to day might work.

The truly sad part of it is the people who likely experience the most diffculty with utilities ae those that have become victims of the economy or took a bad hit on medical bills.
They are likely hardworking people that own their homes and don't qualify for utility assistance.
Article in business section of today's Indy Star referenced delinquent homeowner rates still going up.

I think it's unfortunate, but I look at the conditions, heat waves in Calif, coupled with the Senior population spells absolute chaos.

I know if my senior relatives died as result of some action as the above, I would be beyond furious for the lack of consideration - Especially after all the money the citizens of America have shelled out.

 Seniors should expect free utilities now? Maybe I'm not following you?

Just think: under Obama's plan, electricity costs will necessarily increase.

What kind of plan is that? He puts hundreds of thousands to millions of people out of work, then fixes it so they have to pay higher utility bills!

"We are all Socialists now" (I believe that was on the cover of Newsweek)

(Have you ever noticed that those with LOTS of money - politicians - are telling the rest of us to cut back and to give to those "less fortunate" - while they never part with that first penny of THIER money?! :xmad:)

Thank you for correcting that for me. I couldn't for the life of me remember the exact words. (And I have heard it several times!)

Yes, it's going to get much, much worse! :xmad:

Even when I put 15,000 gallons of water into my pool this summer, my bill barely topped $100. How in gods name do you run up a $1700 water bill? That is a years worth of degeneracy and missed payments.

Don't worry. When the suffering gets to be unbearable, the NWO will come in with their new "fix" for all the problems those greedy capitalists caused [their words; not mine].

I have a B.S degree, and I am working at Walgreens. To all those families I say, McDonalds is always hiring. It might not be a good job but at least you will be able to pay a few bills, there is no reason to go 3 years without a job. Thats just laziness, go get a job, any job is better than no job at all. And if you are to lazy to get a job, then you deserve to live in the dark. the pitty stops here.

Sadly, no they are not. McD's has always been a good "go to" job for me when I needed to fill time between better ones, or needed some extra money. They paid for a significant portion of my private pilot license.

But, at least earlier this spring, they not only weren't hiring, they weren't even accepting applications :(

A look into the Liberal Socialist, as Arnold put it best. "The great city of California". I mean who in hell would vote for some ex strung out steroid junkie, not that good of a so called movie action hero for Governor. Might as well put the Dixie Chicks in office next. There is no cure for stupid. Momma always said life's like a box of idiots, you never know which one will be in office next. Sucks too because a good friend of mine just got orders to 29 palms. I have no desire, and I mean no desire to ever go there. I would rather watch paint dry, and sniff glue. While I get punched in the back of the head repeatedly by a 300 lb. kangaroo! When will the perfect earthquake happen, and cause it to split from the rest of the U.S.? Then all the Illegals, and gangs will be able to rain free and kill eachother off :D. Oh but a dream, oh but a dream :n00b:!

We have a good friend who has been living in Southern California for a number of years. About 10 years ago she was thinking about selling her house and moving here to the Midwest because all the Vietnamese immigrants were taking most of the available jobs. For what she could have gotten for her house at the time, she could have purchased a new home in Geist and had money to live on.

After the housing bust (actually the housing bust hit California sooner than elsewhere) it was too late. Not only are utility rates higher than almost anywhere else in the US (too many people, not enough resources - not enough people _paying for resources_) there aren't enough jobs of any sort for all the people living there.

I am very glad that I still have a job that pays a decent wage. However, I have not had a raise in over two years and do not expect one in the foreseeable future. Indy acts like we are not in a deep recession and keeps spending like drunken sailors (sorry if I just insulted any navy vets). Keeping our pro sports teams and providing them with state of the art facilities is a warped priority when our sewers and waterlines are old and very deteriorated and constantly breaking down. Lots of people are out of work, yet costs continue to rise. Car insurance goes up. Rent goes up. Health insurance and co-payments go up while coverage drops. Gas goes up and down like a yo-yo. Food continues to creep up. The bammer is constantly on vacation, playing golf or having a good time while oil gushes into our offshore water and now maybe even into our great lakes. The idiots in Washington just sit around thinking up new ways to take more of our money without calling it as raising our taxes except on the rich. You are right that I am probably rambling, but we are in a mess while Washington seems to be fiddling while the rest of the country is burning. Oh yeah, the FBI wants the power to be able to go deeper into all of our private lives with no good justification and not even have to notify the person whose information they want to check out. What really scares me is why the people who are supposed to be conservatives like the talk radio hosts and the few politician that I thought that I could trust are not screaming out at the tops of their lungs and telling us of these things as they leak out. Are they all in cahoots to one degree or another? Is it all one big hoax at the expense of us little guys? Why are they not going after Charlie Wrangle harder to expose the corruption of the liberals?

Kalifornia is a lost cause. It has been overrun by the illegal immigrants. They know what has to be done, but will not do it which just severely hurts the few decent people that are left. Everyone from the environmental groups to the commie actors to the liberal state government are doing everything they can to ruin that State. On top of that, they are expecting to be bailed out with the rest of us's tax dollars because they think themselves too big to fail. When I think of the rathole places like San Francisco and several other lost cause cities that are there and Nancy Pelosi and Maxine Waters and Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein and many other people who live like royalty, but expect me to scrimp and scratch and accept rationing live there, I really hope that it just drops into the Pacific after the next big quake. I also have relatives in that cesspool, but they are a lost cause and have looked at us Hoosiers as only country bumpkin hicks that are not cool like them and their face-sucking buddies who have knocked up many a beach bunny. Just my two cents.
