I am a long time practitioner of Hojojitsu or the Art of Binding. Cordage can be very effective in trained hands. Check out Jones Bros Cuff Links.

I've always seen it as an attack weapon. It would be pretty hard to justify it's use as "defensive". Also, being as defensive normally means the other guy acted first, pretty hard to even employ in the defense.

How are you gonna "defensively" gonna find yourself surprising an attacker from behind?

Nope... with one of those babies, you're the attacker. At least any jury these days is gonna see it that way. BTW, 550 cord is gonna soak up your DNA a lot better than wire would too.

The amazing garrote in action. Complete sneak attack, larger attacker vs smaller victim. Male vs female, so upper body strength advantage is increased. Still unable to control the victim.

That's why you pressure test visits from the good idea fairy before risking your life in a real world situation based on how you imagine it'll work.

I assume that the material has a LOT to do with it. It MIGHT work with some thin piano wire and of course handles so you dont cut your hands. But something like 550 or a shoelace will have too much surface area to do much good as we see here.

So I am sure there is a way to make it work, but its not going to be something clandestine that can be passed off as harmless.

You mean barbed wire is not clandestine?

It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog:boxing:
