What's the difference between the .308 and 7.62, other than the pressures, slight casing changes, and chamber dimensions?

I assume the .308 has better stopping power, and potentially distance?
    What's your preference, and why?

I have an opportunity to get an AI AX.308.
It has the scope, front grip, light, and several extra mags.

Assuming you mean 7.62x51, for practical purposes there are no differences.

ETA: this response was to address your "stopping power" and potential range question, not load data or cartridge specifications.

    Wow...chill out

Your title didn't really convey what the thread was about. I was curious so I clicked. Didn't know the answer to your question so I didn't respond...until now. I'd venture to guess I'm not the only one who did that.

This is more of an ammo question. Maybe pick that sub forum and use a different title. ".308 vs 7.62 question" is just a suggestion.

I'm assuming if you're talking about stopping power that you need to go further into your research than a forum. Every thing you listed difference wise depends on the load and barrel length more than 308 vs 762. 308 is hotter than 7.62 but that doesn't mean it will go further or have more StOpPiNg PoWeR.

ax308? Oh, yeah, a man of good taste I see, do you have photos? Asking for a friend, the friend is me.

That is a wicked fine stick. Which optic will you be using? I think ammo/optic and your dope scale would matter more to you right now.

There are several differences: headspacing, case walls, pressure curves, etc.

    See if this helps any:

NOT EXACTLY the way to win friends and influence enemies. But then, who cares? Maybe GOOGLE cares. AND, I certainly will. All my days (and evenings) are wonderful!

Holy crap dude! Better title would have helped!
Big difference between .308 and 7.62 is that one is in inches and the other is millimeters.
    Have a wonderful evening yourself.

The easiest way to tell the difference is to take a 7.62x51 NATO and chamber it in a nice new .308. Then, without pulling the trigger try to unchamber the round.

Hint, try having a dead blow hammer with you because rubber mallets bounce around too much...

Up in the region, our respectful response would be Go fornicate yourself. If there is only one correct answer, that’s all you need.
