Excuse my language but this sucks. Pretty sure the Germ Factory( volunteering to help with Concessions at the B ball Game at my wife’s school) waged an attack. Now pretty sure I have the flu. My wife had it and slept all day Thursday, Friday, and part of today. Normally I just deal with it, life on the farm does not afford the luxury of taking it easy.

So I was wondering what OTC remedies work for you? Seems like there is so much out there, I don’t need to feel normal just looking for something that will not cause drowsiness and will make the all over body ache subside.

    Seriously?
Yes and some lemon will make a Hot Toddy like mentioned above.
    Ive never added hot water.

    Ingredients
    • Boiling water, as needed.
    • 2ounces scotch, bourbon, rye, Irish whiskey, dark rum, cognac or amaro.
    • ¾ounce light honey, such as acacia, or maple syrup (or 1 teaspoon Demerara sugar)
    • 1(3-inch) lemon peel.
    • Cinnamon stick and whole star anise, to garnish (optional)

Does the alcohol provide a benefit? Hard to believe I do not drink. Allergic to alcohol which also takes NyQuil liquid off the table as well.

I would guess it elevates your temperature and dehydrates you and puts one to sleep.
With dehydrating it will help clear out snot and mucus. Maybe with that it moves you forward to feeling better?

That sounds like what Grandma gave us when we were kids. It worked.

We use Tylenol Cold and Flu here. I get the daytime formula and use Benadryl at night.

    Cold:
Chest Congestion: Guaifenesin (Mucinex) as directed
Sinus Congestion: Oxymetazoline (Sinux). For me only 1 - 2 sprays in each nostril opens everything up. Directions say use it every 12 hours, I use it as needed to breath. I feel like if I keep my nose open, it prevents it from progressing into other things and clears up faster.
    Fever: Your preferred NSAID

    Flu:
Preferred NSAID for fever, can alternate types and take more often if its really bad.

    Both:
Dive into some games to forget how awful I feel.
    Sleep when tired.

I make Hot Toddy's every time me, my wife, or one of my kids are sick. Usually drink it at night about an hour before bed. Mine is a little different, but similar and very simple.

    - 10 oz. hot decaf Green Tea
    - 2 oz Fireball whiskey
    - 1 oz lemon juice
    - 1 oz clover honey

I swear drinking one of these each night you feel sick cuts the duration of the cold / flu in half. I would also think that if someone didn't drink alcohol, you could do the cinnamon stick instead of Fireball, but the whiskey relaxes me and helps me sleep at night. I use Green tea instead of straight hot water because there are a lot of health benefits including antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Some studies also show that it can reduce coughing and congestion.

Be sure to amp up your vit D intake when you feel a cold/flu coming on and also during. My normal daily vit D is 4000 iu's. A couple weeks ago I had a sore throat starting... kicked vit D up to an additional 2000 iu in the morning then another 2000 iu at night. Sore throat faded away. YMMV.
