My mom is sick now and had a positive test. She preaches and wears a mask like itS her religion. I guess the mask didnt work.
On the bright side she is doing well. Headache and congestion. Mild cough. She will be 65 this year.

It is curious that mask are simultaneously ineffective because people don't wear them right and there's big gaps for warm moist air to escape, and yet their dangerous to the wearer because they trap warm moist air.

No. If warm air trapped inside is a problem (I guess it would be a great place to grow bacteria) then I think the gaps that make them less effective and let *some* breathed air out, would still trap some warm moist air. Two things can be true at the same time.

And it's not that I think masks are ineffective, even the cloth ones. I think they're less effective than the mask-karens think they are.

That brings up a caveat of even the good certified masks. The more you breathe through them the less effective they become. The properties of the filter material causes the tiny particles to adhere to the surfaces in the filter. As you breathe moist air out through the filter material it reduces that ability over time. It becomes less effective for the very size particles you really want it to stop.
The good masks usually have a data sheet available for how long they retain their effectiveness. This is usually rated in hours of breathing time. They also lose effectiveness just sitting on a shelf if the sealing packaging is open - this typically takes months though. The effective times are much greater for the type where the filter material is in canisters because of the much greater surface area but almost nobody has or uses those.

Oh how quickly things change. American Journal of Medicine's Jan 2021 coronavirus treatment flow chart now includes hydroxychloroquine. I guess now that Trump is gone it doesn't kill people?

The REAL home run king, Hank Aaron, has passed away...

Hall of Famer, former home run king Hank Aaron dies at 86

What's that got to do with the 'Rona?

He recently received his 'Rona vaccination very publically to help encourage other black people to do the same after a poll found that 40% of those surveyed said they wouldn't get the vaccination.

MLB legend Hank Aaron gets COVID-19 vaccine, hopes to send message to Black Americans

I don't know if his death is connected in any way to recent vaccination. If it is, we'll never hear about. But there is a non zero number of reports of deaths in elderly patients following vaccination.

Thanks for posting this, it was an interesting read. A lot of authors for a review paper lol, i'm guessing the lowly author with the BS degree probably did most of the work.

I was already to read that - expecting these detentions centers to be cushy hotels, and it's all over-exaggerated.

    Nope!

Now, I don't know what a "repeat offender" is in this case... but sections of refugee camps, huh?
They probably don't need the "cushy hotels" because politically connected repeat offenders would not be prosecuted anyhow.

In other news, Indiana continues to do well overall. Solid trend of decreasing infections/deaths and stable hospital capacity. We rock!

Nationally, there looks to be room for optimism, too, as long as you and/or loved ones aren't currently hospitalized. The serious/critical number seems to be steadily decreasing. The CFR has been stable at 1.67% +/- 1% for a couple weeks. But, part of that is based on relatively low daily positives and relatively high daily deaths. As the deaths decrease, the CFR will get back to decreasing, too.

The daily deaths are still in exponential growth, but that's a lagging indicator. It'll probably be like that into February, but should level off into a more linear pattern as the vaccine distribution starts influencing the numbers.

There will likely be some troubled times, and complacency remains a potential problem (and mutations), but I'm personally hopeful that by the time the schools let out, we'll be able to have a relatively normal summer. Then, back to a regular school experience next Fall.

    Hopefully.

    Well. Crap.

Mr Johnson said: "In addition to spreading more quickly it also now appears that there is some evidence that the new variant, the variant that was first identified in London and the south east, may be associated with a higher degree of mortality.
"It's largely the impact of this new variant that means the NHS is under such intense pressure."

So, a politician saying it, doesn't make it so. And, with their nationalized health system, I'm not sure one can really discern whether the new variant is actually more fatal or if the increase in the number of cases is overstressing the system and that overstress is causing more fatalities.

Just one more thing about this situation that we don't really know.

Speaking of national socialists, California had a transparent, specific formula for determining when closures would be appropriate. At some point last week, coincidentally overlapping with the buildup to the inauguration, they stopped sharing their modeling.

They've reopened some areas with no real explanation.
