Does it regardless of fuel level...

Try a new gas cap, or just run w/o the gas cap to try it out. If not that, then you start thinking about spark gaps/plugs, plug wires, ignition coils, O2 sensors, fuel filters, and after that quite a bit troubleshooting/diagnostics.

    Any engine codes?

I have a p1391 code even after replacing cam and crank sensors

Crank sensors notorious on the XJ inline 6.
The wires to it can get cooked over time too.

If a crank sensor it could fail again anytime (and not recover).

My buddy limped his off and on for 6 months,, died once a month and "self recovered". Last time it didn't..............quite a ways from home.

My first XJ died maybe a half dozen times in 2 weeks before it puked completely and needed a new crank sensor. My other XJ failed, recovered and I put a new CS the next day.

ZJ did silly stuff like that, and never recovered until I yanked all electrical connections/cleaned and reseat. Suspect ECM. Been fine last 3 yrs.

The crank sensor was first thing I replaced...you saying I should splice in a new pigtail for the crank sensor connector?

The wires can lay on the head/valve cover and cook over time.
Not all crank sensor issues are with the sensor itself. Sometimes it's just the wiring to it.
Cooked CS wires is a known issue.

Another time I lost power and popped the fuel injector rail cap, saw it was getting no fuel, so went back and found a busted retainer on my fuel pump connector. I taped it up and drove it for a couple of yrs like that :)

I keep hearing a "popping" sound coming from underneath my jeep. I think its more towards the front drivers side. I'm going to crawl underneath it this weekend, and get my brother to help me figure out what's going on.

I've been curious if its a tie rod or even the track bar. But I dunno.

I'm also getting popping while steering the wheels left and right...I suspect tie rods, same for you if you get popping while turning the wheel.

If its the tie rods, what do I look for? Is it a simple fix like tightening something up?

I'm saving up for that Currie steering kit anyway, but it would be nice to know this would take care of it.
