Im gonna rebarrel a rem 788 and am thinking of making my own action wrench by boring out a piece of 2'' stock ive got on hand to a snug fit around the reciever. then drill and tap 2 holes in side of it and cut a slit in it to clamp down with. Think of a scope ring but solid on one side. drill a hole for an action screw to go through then weld on a handle? total cost $0.00 is this idea feasable or am i missing a key peice of the opereration?

    No idea about it...

But is it worth all the work/money to rebarrel a Rem788?

If it were ME, I'd look into finding a used rifle in the caliber that I was after. But - that's me.

Hopefully someone will be along to help you out with the wrench idea!

That is similar to how R700 action wrenches work but on certain receivers you MUST be conscientious of the wear areas of the receiver so you don't damage them. I would look for a commercial 788 action wrench and see how they are made.

FWIW, if you need a barrel vice I have one in the loaner thread.

A good wrench fits inside the action and supports it at the most solid part of the action, in the area of the locking lugs. You need to hold it as close to the barrel as you can get but yet not clamp on the very thread you are loosening. Supporting it any other way is risking twisting the action as a whole. I would not do it unless you don't care about damaging the receiver. Support the receiver on the inside.

This wrench is pretty reasonably priced. I have not tried it though. It may or may not fit your action.

Edit: It doesn't not fit your receiver. :-(

The 788 has rear lug's 9 of them. Brownells sells 788 wrench for $135 which is steep for a one off project. Thanks on the barrel vise offer! if i cant make my idea on that work I'll hit you up.

This is my ghetto action wrench. Actually works really well.
