I like to put a drop of CLP on the firing pin and give it and the spring just a light coat using my fingers. I clean my R1 every time I shoot it and have never noticed much of anything on the firing pin.

My Wilson Combat owner's manual says a drop of oil on the side of the firing pin spring before assembly. It says to rack the slide and function test the pistol about a dozen times to distribute oil where it needs to be.

1 drop on the spring equates out to a thin film/coat over the pin/spring once it's distributed.
