This is interesting. for the past two years, I have owed no federal tax while on Social Security.

The state on the other hand…
Move to Missippi. It is a “retirement friendly” state. Which means they don’t tax the **** out of your retirement.

How have y’all’s property taxes changed this year?

The feds deserve all the slings and arrows they get. The state and local governments don’t get nearly enough.
OMG. It jumped last year (tax year 2021) by a lot, so the tax bill was a ****-ton. It increased slightly this year (2022 property tax year) from a ****-ton to about 1.05 ****-tons.

I guess Lawrence county is behind the times.

I’ve decided I’m voting against every single incumbent republican local government holder this time. In Lawrence county democrats do not get elected. Well…at least by running as democrats.

Many people have no idea who pays what taxes as evidenced by this poll.

“The top 1% of earners account for 42% of federal income taxes paid, however, nearly half of Americans thought they contribute less than 12%.”

“Here’s how the numbers break down:”

    • 22% guessed the wealthy accounted for 1%.
    • 25% guessed the wealthy accounted for 12%.
    • 22% guessed the wealthy accounted for 42%.
    • 12% guessed the wealthy accounted for 64%.
    • 19% said they were not sure.
“According to the poll, one-third of Democrats thought the top 1% pay only 1% of all income taxes. Approximately 77% of Democrats believe the wealthy aren’t paying their fair share and they aren’t alone in wanting the rich to pay more.”

At the state level we got stuck with voting for Todd Young, who BTW was a marine. I think the only reason he didn’t run as a Democrat is that he stands a better chance as a Republican. And now we’re stuck with him in the US Senate.

...In her search she reads about an older couple that lives on Soc. Sec. That’s all of their income. They owe the .gov 6800.00 and they have no way to pay. ...
In a single year, to owe $6,800 in federal income tax (with no withholding), a couple married filing jointly would have to make around $89,000.

Also in a single year, if we add Indiana state tax in the mix, a person would have to make a bit over $70,000 (with no withholding) to have a tax liability of $6,800.

There can be some variations with credits and such, but not a lot. Something doesn't seem quite right about this story.

So why didn’t any conservatives recruit, support, and fund a better candidate in 2016? He won 67% of the vote. It was not even close. Then to his credit he defeated Bayh. Why didn’t anyone Do anything?

I remember a while back my mother in-law got a communication from SSA saying they made a mistake in how much they were depositing in direct deposit payouts to some recipients. Which I think happened over several years. Turned out she wasn’t affected, so not an issue for her. But they wanted the overpayments back, with interest. I think that if people didn’t notice the overpayments, they could rack up a hefty sum. Maybe they were one of the ones affected.

Maybe you should check your recollection of history. Todd Young gets credit for being a chamber-o-commerce/establishment Republican, and Fudd on gun control.

Oh. And he was a marine.

Isn't it such a beautiful thing that the gov gives away money left and right when they deem it of strategic importance to the tune of trillions with no input from the citizens that have to clean up their consistent theft or misuse of funds. Or they simple print it and use it when, where and how they deem it necessary, and slap a IOU on it and add it to the giant stack on our backs?

The elderly couple that is just trying to tread water and be comfortable for their remaining years gets stiffed royally screwed.

My mother's generation will get more screwed, my generation will be deeply screwed and what's going be left for my kids generation to deal with? How can there be any more levels of screwed. Ultra mega triple stuffed screwed?

    Bassackwards.

What have I got wrong, maybe recheck yours. If Todd was soo bad and everybody knew it, why didn’t the complainers get someone better in the ballot. Who is Marlin Stutzman besides a footnote?

Oh. And he was a marine.
    Has he ever oversold that…

I’ll ask her when she gets home to reread what she read. And it was FB so I don’t have much faith in it anyway. Now given your math I have even less. And of course a lot of those folks embellish the stories as they are passed from one to the next. But I can say when we drove by there were a lot of cars parked there. But that could be late or last minute filers. It is a big company that was open all weekend.

I'm no expert in taxes, but the numbers didn't seem right to me so I ran them through an online tax calculator.

If memory serves, back in the '80s a chart was on the back cover of the 1040 booklet with much of this information.

So, is it too soon to promote one of my favorite amendment proposals?

"The United States government may only raise revenue from the citizens and residents of the United States by one means. That means must bee qually apportioned to each citizen by equal amounts per divisions ofo ne hundred. It shall be permissible to set a floor or threshold such that citizens with means below the threshold are not compelled to contribute to the Nation's revenue. No citizen shall be afforded methods to reduce their burden to the revenue of the United States relative to other citizens. The XVI Amendment is repealed four years from the dateo f ratification of this Amendment. No other tax, fee, charge, or anyo ther method of raising revenue from a citizen or resident of these United States shall be permissible four years after ratification of this Amendment..."

Modify for the State, and we all get to know what we're paying and largely for what. I believe it would make it much more difficult to divide and conquer the electorate as well as hide and obfuscate the total dollars we pay to the government.

Just an addendum, I don’t believe most people know or have a clue where most Federal Tax dollars come from. We as citizens pay a tax of some kind on virtually every single thing used for daily life. Some going one place, state, local, federal. Some going to others. One of my peeves is the traffic offenders telling the traffic cop “my taxes pay your salary “ when they and there parents and grandparents have lived in subsidized rental housing there whole life. Which tax dollars are they referring to? They don’t have a clue.
The next person that declares themselves a Sovereign Citizen during a traffic stop, should immediately get deported IMO.

Because it is not that simple.

Joe makes $125,000 a year working at a job.

Bill makes $175.000 a year but has $75,000 in tools and supplies being a handyman.

Jack makes $450,000 a year but has a million invested in equipment for his work.

But “No citizen shall be afforded methods to reduce their burden to the revenue of the United States relative to other citizens“ so it sounds good but doesn’t work for the millions of entrepreneurs in this country…
