100%. It is a the people problem. Outside of INGO I don’t know more than a few folks that EVER mention “cutting spending”…
They don't. They cheer every time some politician announces a new project. Every republican local councilman/woman will go after every "free" dollar they can find in the system. The people demand it.

You should at least be exempt from property taxes on your primary residence once you reach retirement age. And at least up to a certain amount. I mean, somebody like Jim Irsay in his $8m estate shouldnt be exempt, But Some elderly couple in a $200k or less house shouldnt pay. Provided they've paid at least X years of property taxes. Some old person that decides to move here and buy a house to retire in shouldnt necessarily be exempt. It should be something that folks that have paid for years get to "age out" and stop after a while.

I disagree. I am not a fan of government taxes that pick winners and losers. If there must be a tax, everyone should have equal (percentage) skin in the game. The more loopholes and exceptions, the more willing people are to raise taxes on "other people". The only income tax should be a flat tax. And there should be no tax on assets at all. But if there is one, it should be the same percent for everyone.

And Mitch Daniels did make it much better. But better is not the same as good.

Yeah the old raise the assessments crap is getting old. They are using it to defeat the spirit of the 1% property tax cap.

Daniels did have it fixed... until they figured out a way around it.
Agree. I'm taxed on my crawl space. Attached garage is part of the house and taxed at 1%. Detached garage is 3%. Concrete patio, 12x20 shed for mower/tools, gazebo for fire pit, etc are all 2-3%. Totally against the spirit of the original 1% cap. Buddy bought house with unusable in ground pool. Taxed 3% on pool until he filled it in to create garden. Now he's taxed on the old concrete sidewalk that goes from house to garden. Sheesh!!

We all ( all types of corporations included ) should pay with what we spend and not what we make or own.

Does that happen often? Is somebody going to spend a decade+ in a slum to save on taxes in retirement ? This feels like a solution looking for a problem.
Don't know how often, but it does happen. My cousin and in law as an example. They moved from a nice place, into an even nicer one on the course at a country club.

What about if after they retire they move to a different county? They might have skin in the game where they lived, but not in the new place.

Retired folks have largely fixed income. My pension from former employer has no cost of living increases, same dollar amount each month for last 14 years. Property tax has increased 100% in last 20 years, social security is nowhere close to that.
Imagine living at age 50 on the same wage/budget that you were earning at age 25. Retired folks still have to eat, replace a worn out vehicle, replace the roof, etc, all from fixed income. We're not gonna get a raise, there's no overtime pay, no bonus for perfect attendance, safe work practice, or outstanding work performance.

I pulled comparable sales for my friend, the valuation by the county was pretty close. However it is a flawed & corrupt design.

My monthly expense has increased by over $415 in property tax alone, insurance went up dramaticly as well. How many people can just command a raise at will?

The State of Indiana & each county commands a raise at will with virtually no recourse by the citizens.

I believe everyone that has been in more than 1 term needs to be Primaried, unless their voting record shows otherwise.

Why should any sector be exempt from paying what others have to pay?
Is it right that my neighbor is exempt from property taxes in Madison Co because hes more that 70% disabled?

That's because there is a large majority that have no idea how economics, etc works. Just look at all the brilliant folks who think fast food workers, etc should be making much more $$ but don't understand how that effects pricing on that same food and then how that effects the rest of the economy and no one is better off for it, etc.
