So a ship loses power, there’s no rudder control? No back up system?

At low speed boats with propeller/rudder have rather poor control when you lose propulsion. Anybody who has had to operate a Mastercraft ski boat will tell you getting docked or on a trailer takes small short bursts of power at low speed to keep control. Losing propulsion on something like that I would imagine makes changing direction slow. I think container ships have bow thrusters as well but are operated by electrical power.

Some large ships (no idea about this one) have maneuvering thrusters fore and aft that can push the bow or stern perpendicular to its path, that is, they can push the ship sideways, or rotate the ship on its axis. These are used to lessen (or eliminate) the need for tugs to maneuver in tight quarters.

Now, pure speculation, what if the ship was moving forward and was counting on the thrusters to nudge it sideways to get under the center section of the bridge, but then the front thrusters (or both) failed...then momentum just takes you.

    Again, 100% speculation.
They will have bow thrusters, they are only used for low speed use to help dock or to help spin around to dock or move away from the pier. Not for use underway.

    Hey, how'd you know?

Yeah it's a skill, when you can't just aim the thrust axis around like with an outboard or IO. If you aren't pushing water across that rudder, you have no control at all.

    Holy sh!t

    Edit
This is a bridge that has no Dolphins to protect it from what happened this morning.
Just awful. It immediately reminded me of the Sunshine Skyway disaster. (And the Dolphins were one of the main safety mitigations in the redesign of the reconstructed bridge.)

Thankfully it happened over night. Many more vehicles were on the Sunshine Skyway at the time of the collision. I believe only one person survived, and that, from sheer luck. Hopefully this one has a better outcome for the 20 reported missing.

Old wood boat from the 50s I restored. A good friend trained me on trailering and docking using his Mastercraft as he said my boat was so pretty he didn't want to see me mess it up learning. It's great to have friends like that to keep you from doing stupid stuff by being overconfident.;)

The Blaze radio just reported the ship was calling in a mayday, the ship had lost power. The bridge was shut down stopping traffic just a few moments before impact.
I noticed that. I was watching the car headlights cross the bridge in the videos. Thinking “oooh which car is the last one to cross before it all goes down…”

Then right before the crash, I didn’t see any headlights.
