Trust me, best bang for the buck. Hopefully it's been mentioned already but I'm not reading 171 pages.

After that, as OP stated, Bulleit, although I prefer the rye.

I'll have to keep an eye out for this... been enjoying your Sweet Mash Rye barrel proof since we visited the distiller last fall... but it needs a cube/splash or two for my taste, so this might be Goldilocks on the proof for me.

On a separate note, while week-ending in New Albany, had a pour of Stagg, Jr. Now I need to find a bottle of that tasty stuff. I definitely recommend Exchange for dinner... they have lot's of bourbons not on their standard list.

It's all over up here if you're in the area.
Found some over the weekend at Big Red in Bloomington. It's not bad. Not as good as Old Elk wheated, but also about half the price.

I have seen people saying this is good stuff. So the wife snagged a bottle at Costco today. It's a great deal at $23 for a liter. It's definately got a lot more going on than say Evan Williams BiB...

Up front I’m a wheated guy. That said found a couple of gems lately that are exactly what this thread is about. Hard to find anything that meets the thread title anymore. Was buying Blanton for $35 when this thread started. :tantrum:

    Bowman Brothers small batch.

Benchmark full proof and top floor were both good.

Whistle Pig 15 Year Old Single Barrel bourbon.

15 year old scotch is not uncommon but for bourbon 15 year old is close to ancient. Quite pricy as it was a bottle in a sealed box in a sealed bag, (many multiple times over $50) but super smooth and not overly 'oaked' which is the risk with bourbon. In fact it is amazingly smooth and mellow, despite being well over 100 proof. If not for the price this would be a great choice as an 'everyday' bourbon!

Scotch is often aged in barrels that were previously used and previously had bourbon or rye in the barrel. Scotch is often aged for 15, 20 or more years. But bourbon is aged in newly charred white oak barrels and so it can run the risk of being too charred or too oaked if the aging is long. That is far less an issue (non-issue?) with Scotch in previously used barrels.

I loved the blue label Penelope, so I decided to grab the white(cheap) one this time.

I really can't think of anything I like better at that price point.

Benchmark!! It's a good one for the occasional guest who doesn't know better that isn't expensive at all. Some of their other releases (bonded, full proof, etc are a decent price also)

If you're into Ryes, Sam's Club last week had Sazerac Rye 1.75L for $43 iirc...couldn't say no at that price!

I've tried to stick with American owned on the big labels (Buffalo / Sazerac family mostly). They've taken a lot of awards recently, and for good reason.

A friend drinks Old Crow Bourbon Whisky. It is actually pretty good. I think it’s around $15 a bottle.

A distillery only has to provide 40% of its own distilled spirits in what they sell. The rest comes from large commercial distilleries. The maker then finishes it. This lowers their production costs.

In effect the bourbon you pay for has a highly inflated price mainly due to popularity.
