Had a guest speaker in an economics class at college. Someone ask his opinion on unions. He made a single statement. “As a company, if you treat your employees in such a way that they prefer to bring in and work under a union contract, then you are getting what you deserve.”
During question and answer time, I would have asked him if he thought without Union Representation in today's world and the past. Would he receive the benefits he was receiving from the company he works for.

I’ve never had an issue with businesses selling their products at what the market will tolerate. Owners can make as much as they can. Secondly I think prospective employees are entitled to do the same when it comes to employment compensation. Get every penny you can squeeze out of them. People will either buy the product or not. The business will either stay open or not. The employee will either keep working or not. Always ask for more than you know you can get and negotiate as close to the ask as you can.

Dodge did that with the Neon. Paying people $1.22 an hour really did not work out. Warranty costs were very high, reject rates were really high. I remember that the Kokomo transmission plant had dozens of people on every shift hand gauging parts to send to Mexico, so only nearly perfect parts were sent. They were hoping to pad the quality issues. The effort made no difference.

Side trivia. Guess what the highest warranty cost car Chrysler ever sold was? The German built Crossfire. All the chronic problems they had were VERY expensive to repair, and all the parts from Germany were insanely expensive. Like the little electric motor that ran the back wing was $600.
There are more vehicles made in Mexico now. Processes have gotten better. Look how many vehicles are made in Brazil and Mexico now. I could definitely see Stellantis pulling production out of the US completely. Most of the highest selling Stellantis vehicles are not made in the US anymore anyway. They could definitely pull out of the US and only have a rough year or two. I'm willing to bet Ford would be about the same. Don't know about GM.

Cars are assembled here. Parts are made all over
Nope, Stellantis cars are made in Canada, Ram Classics are made in Mexico. I don't think they do any cars in the US anymore, and as much as half of their trucks come from Mexico. The Renegade is Italy and Brazil. Really the only ones made in the US are the higher end Jeeps and the newest gen 4 door 1500 Rams.

I meant, the ones "produced" in the US are merely assembled here. The parts are mostly made elsewhere

And have been a long long time.
Long time ago while working on a elevator in a Delco Plant, I watched FMC starters being built.
Parts on bid is nothing new.
I worked for a seatbelt manufacturer back in the 90s. They moved all of their operations South of the border. Many of their parts were made in the upper Midwest, shipped to Mexico, assembled, and then shipped back to Michigan and Ohio to the manufacturers.

It's called private labeling. We had plant 8 upstairs that was 100% Bosch that made VW, Porsche, Audi, Opel and German products on German equipment. All the shipping labels and cartons said: Bosch Made In USA
The plastics line in Plant 9 made all the bezels for everyone's radio that we made like Cadillac, Buick, Chevy, Jeep, Opel, John Deere etc for domestic and foreign as long as we had contracts to build their radio.
    Plant 7 was Harley Davidson.
They only make service contract parts now and heartache.

Otis Elevator did the same with most of the Bloomington and a few other plants around the world.
With NAFTA even though the manufacturing costs were higher, the federal tax breaks made it more than worthwhile.
