My dog had one from our local acreage in February. We treat him for ticks but are still vigilant about giving him the once over after walks/hikes. So far none for us bipeds but the year is early! I don't wanna spook the OP, but that's one hell of a reaction. And the continued swelling after removal doesn't sound good either. Watch it carefully.

I'm glad I wasn't the first person to report a tick bite this year! Actually I haven't even found one yet. This winter was odd to say the least so I kept up the yard spraying regimen and permethrin clothing treatment all winter. Plenty of others have been finding them so maybe I've been lucky so far.

Swelling is going down considerably and one more zee pill to go. My Mother had one removed and the nurse gave her a script for 2 pills. She looked it up when she got home and it also treats malaria.

I am in N. Central and we keep a tick jar at my Mom's that has about 30 ticks in it that my beagles get in her 4 acres of pines. That is just this year. Last year was 150 total. My dogs take internal pills so when they come in the house, we have to pick ticks, usually off their heads as the ticks try to get away from their skin smell.
Can I ask which brand of the oral meds you have for your dog? Why do you choose the oral over topical. Just a learning question because I am not familiar with oral tick meds. Only used the frontline with our dogs but I know the oral has made its place now.

I lucked out. Went to TC Steele site today and hiked. No ticks. We remembered the bug spray halfway through the trail.

... I use to run barefoot in shorts and a t shirt through the woods and never got a tick. Now I find them on me after trimming bushes in front of my house 150 yards from the woodsline.

I wonder if long pants, sox and shoes aren't a tick highway? I'm in shorts whenever its warm, 98% of the time barefoot or in Chacos. I hardly ever get ticks on me.

Sure you can. My vet sells NexGard. Sometimes when we comb them we will find a dead tick but not filled with blood. The majority try to flee. Between this and heartworm meds it is about $35 per dog per month. They are under 50#

near Bedford on a whole lot of land.
Permethrin keeps them off of me, It's one of those "must have" chemicals to live in the woods.
Yep. I’ve been buying Insect Shield clothing the last few years and have watched ticks crawling on me die.

That, and DEET, and frequent tick checks are life in the woods around here. Oh, and every year is “the worst tick year” according to folks on outdoors groups.

    .
Interesting idea. When I was a kid I'd rarely wear more than shorts and sneakers, and got very few ticks, like 3-5 all summer. Now usually its long pants, shirt, and boots, and get lots, can hardly walk outside without picking up a couple. Sometimes mowing or doing other physical work I'll wear shorts, no shirt, and boots, and it seems like I'd get far fewer. Maybe like so many other things the experts are wrong...

I think the ticks are attracted to the warmth and moisture inside long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Chiggers on the other hand, like shorts. But they also are attracted to the warmth and moisture inside shorts. Speaking from personal experience.

Advantage is one we use and you can get a spray for dogs that has a citrus smell/base at farm stores that works well and I spray it around the doors to keep skeeters away .. it seems to help
