We started out tarping our stacks. It proved to do no more than provide a nice home for critters so we don't tarp any more.

We stack a face cord uncovered on 2x2x8 ground contact posts sitting on concrete blocks and it works out fine, the wood cures in a reasonable time depending on species. I like having the shed, this one when full holds more than a full cord. Wish I had five more of them.

Rain and snow doesn't really detract from the curing process. If you take it indoors to burn after it's been rained on it will dry up quickly sitting next to your stove.

That looks like a cozy stove. I wish had a stove in the house. Just use a wood boiler

So the stove is a duel fuel? Hybrid = wood and 20 volt batteries?? I will have to look into that..

    Some notes:

Before I could afford a 2nd saw, I carried (and still do) a "boy's axe" for freeing a stuck bar.

The moisture meter seen in my pics I think is no longer produced. But I spent less that $30 for it and have been very pleased. Spend accordingly.

Get a picaroon Pickaroon! (missed it by just that much DD).

Just get a second bar and chain. Unbolt the power head and leave bar and chain behind and then cut it out using the second one. If you are really bad, get a third bar and chain for a horrible day.

    .
The speed at which they work impressed me the most. Getting older, I tire out more easily, so I want machinery to do more to keep me in the game.

We heat primarily with a large furnace in the basement. My dad had a freestanding Clayton wood stove put in 91 or 92 and at the time was one of the better ones he could find locally. Before that they were still using the old wood furnace that my grandad put in the house back in the 30s.

I use a Husqvarna 455 Rancher for my main saw and have an old Poulan Wildthing for brush work & trimming. I split most of our wood with either an axe, maul or sledge/wedges. I do have a splitter that mounts on the 3 point of my tractor but it is a slow mover but has a lot of power.

I have learned to cut trees down in the fall after the leaves have dropped and will cut and burn that the following year. I have been caught short on wood and will burn smaller wood after it has sat for a month or two. I have also made it a habit to clean the chimney (SS liner in a tile chimney) once a month whether it needs it or not and this can be done completely from the bottom of the liner.

I've been dreaming of getting a wolf ridge or eastonmade. If the mega millions pays off Friday that would be first purchase
A lot of people on the interwebz has said this Forester 22-Ton Menards special from 2017 was a piece of junk but we must have gotten one made on Wednesday. It has served us well, always starting on the second or third pull no matter the weather.

The OG would LOVE a Wolf Ridge with a log lift. Maybe when this one gives up. We think the ram into the wedge design would speed our production up tremendously.

I use the ol tractor supply co line. It is fine and has done everything I need. But that wolf ridge is just fantastic.

I've been slacking in 2023. Bought a couple big loads of wood off Facebook marketplace to keep the outdoor boiler fed. Decided to cut up some hard maple and dead elm a tree service dumped. That maple splits explosively when the wedge barely touches it. The elm, not so much. Spent 15 minutes trying to split one big round and ended up with a stringy mess. Guess I'll let it sit awhile.

Here is my work in progress. It sets on car axle with 16” tires and about 9’ long
Working on: Have a repurposed 8 hp Honda engine and a love joy coupler to put on.
I had replaced the hydraulic fluid and the filter.
The lower control for the ram is bad I think.. symptom or issue is sometimes running the ram forward it will stall the motor. The ram will not move forward but letting off the forward lever the motor recovers and most of the time it will split whatever is on the splitter. Going backwards it runs fine. The upper control for the lift operates fine
This would split anything I put on it and having the lift that moves 180 degrees from side to side and picks up 400-500 pounds easily. I’ve pulled a car motor with it. It’s handy to say the least
I’m pulling the controller off to take apart and rebuild or buying a new one.. AE8E99B6-3702-48F0-82A5-A41AF69B611D.png 9CB98A6F-5B40-4547-BE9B-D52237929334.png

Thats a back saver. Do ya have a way to add on to the wedge to make it a 4 way?
