Well son of a gun. At 4:00 we saw the buck my daughter missed last weekend. He was at about 200 yards. No shot. A half hour later six does and fawns walked out. She just watched those. At five or so a nice looking buck walked out about 150 yards away. She called and it walked to about 75 yards. Watching that while sitting with her was super cool. We hunt for two and a half months and she shoots one with 20 minutes left. IMG_20221218_172607673.jpg

Tag soup for me in Indiana this year as well. My season ended with a whimper as travel lag from my trip to Texas earlier this week caught up to me and I never made it out this weekend. Texas, though treated me a little better...

I took this 8 pointer aged at 5.5 at 2:30 in the afternoon on the first day of the hunt. He was my second Texas buck and 4th buck of 5.5 years old or older.

Then I took this big boar at 3:30 on the second day.

Slocked an antlered one yesterday in late archery. I've seen the buck in September with one side, yesterday made the 10th time I've seen him. Being half racked in September I was thinking he had an injury or a mutant. After putting him to rest I found out he was broke off, what I thought was a deformed spike was a shard of beam sticking off his head. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20, he's nothing special but one I wanted to shoot.

We just hit 120,000 which is higher than 5 of the last 7 seasons TOTAL for the season. 8,000 more kills than last year's total. Its going to be slow the next 5 days though..

It's spitting rain and it's a bit foggy but no wind at all.
    Chilly but not cold.
I have today and tomorrow to tag my buck if I can find him.
I can still take a doe too, but I'm really hoping to see that buck.

They were moving good yesterday during my trek to Worthington from Sullivan. Seen a few out in the fields. Later on I'm less than a mile from my parents home and just missed a doe with my Ram. She got across the road after a hard brake on my part. I looked in my rear view and seen a small antlered buck crossing the road as well. I've only hit 3 deer in my (almost) 28 years of driving. #4 was very close yesterday.

    What a shame.
My brother found this guy this afternoon.
Entrails are gone and the carcass wreaks, but I still took the opportunity to salvage the head.
    It's soaking now.
This is one of the largest bodied deer I've ever seen in the woods and I have to find him dead.
I didn't even take a buck this year, and now it looks like they're mocking me
Oh well, I couldn't leave that rack laying on the ground.
One small tine broken off or it would have been a 5 pointer.

    Bummer.

Reminds me of an experience I had last year. All summer long, almost every evening, I kept seeing a pretty nice looking buck in my neighbor's yard (I don't remember how many points he had; he probably wasn't anything special, but when you didn't grow up hunting and are still trying to get your first buck like I am, they all look nice.) I don't think the neighbors hunt anymore, so I'd thought about asking to see if they wouldn't mind me trying to take him once deer season arrived. Then one morning in September the wife and I woke up to see the same buck laying in our yard. It looked like he'd probably been hit by a car (though we never found any blood, so maybe he just had some sort of disease.) Either way, he wouldn't move at all even when I stepped outside and hollered, and he was clearly suffering and needed to be put down. I wasn't sure what the rules are, and didn't want to run afoul of the law by shooting him myself, so I called the sheriff's office, and a deputy came out and was going to put the buck down with his pistol. Unfortunately as he tried to get close for the shot, the buck summoned one last burst of energy and ran into my BIL's corn patch on the next parcel over. The deputy decided against trying to pursue him further, and my BIL found the rotting carcass (which I had forewarned him he might find) a few weeks later when he went to pick his corn.

Looks like it might have had EHD. Looks similar to all the dead ones I found around my place. They all had the similar black color , which I assume is from not being scavenged on . Most of the scavengers shied away from EHD carcasses
