Another weekend, another day of overtime at the plant. Had a machine go down. Some line supervisor calls. I check the server and see the data collector is running and pulling info, but it is not seeing info to pull. I tell the supervisor that an engineer needs to go out to the machine and restart the PLC. Engineer says she is not convinced the issue is her PLC... For the last 3 hours the machine has been down not producing parts while i try and prove beyond a shadow of a doubt it is not the network or the server... Finally the plant manager calls the engineer and tells her to just try restarting the PLC. Total time from Plant Manager call to machine reporting again, 5 minutes. This is why trucks start at like 50k now. Good thing the Engineers have a union to protect their laziness.

There was a young engineer on my staff who was lazy like that. Mostly annoying stuff but when he arbitrarily allowed a key part of production to sit idle overnight, I provided him with the opportunity to move on to his next employer.

Union has nothing to do with that. Process engineers can be like that union or not.
