    The phrase I remember is
" If the rabbit hadn't stopped to take a S*** - the dog wouldn't have caught him "
My late mother, born 1914, used to say "And if the dog hadn't stopped to pee, he would've caught the rabbit!".
Said often in response to me as a kid when I tried using the "if only..." excuse for not getting something done. LOL :-)

I told a young employee at work that I made my annual white bass fishing trip to Ohio but I got skunked this year. He thought it meant that I had to quit with no fish because a skunk drove me away from my fishing spot.

I remember "over yonder" and a nod or point as reasonable directions

I also remember Tea clearly meant Sweet Tea; unsweetened Tea was always a mistake.

"I believe that dog'll hunt" was an explanation frequently used by my grandad when something was broken but he had tweaked it, rigged it, messed with it till it had been 'mechanically improved' to the point that it would probably work now...
