I'd take that bet. Are you calling the Olympic Committee or should I? :D
    You would lose that bet.
Muscle performance is dependent on maximum oxygen levels. When active muscles' oxygen demand exceeds what is available they go into oxygen debt and lactic acid levels increase which decrease performance. A mask will decrease oxygen availability to some degree and increase the lactic acid buildup sooner than without a mask. Any restriction compared to maximum oxygen flow will cause this and decrease performance in all but the very shortest periods of exertion.

As someone who has asthma and being a distance runner (over 30K miles lifetime) I can assure you wearing a mash is detrimental to performance and comfort. Do to my asthma I have worn a mask while running in extreme cold. It's no fun .

Not sure why he believes differently, that seems basic common sense to me. I would add, to tie it all together, is that for many people, particularly those with COPD or asthma, you may not be able to tell just by looking, walking in the grocery is their Olympic event...

You are right - it is common sense - perhaps that is also the answer. :)

I am really surprised you have no empathy for those that struggle to breathe in a mask, whether due to a medical condition or just being out of shape...
It isn't a struggle to breathe...people just don't like the way it feels. Besides, you're putting words in my mouth to try and make me look like a hypocrite.

    1) There is no mask mandate
    2) I never said I had no empathy, just that it doesn't impede breathing
    3) I'll remind for the 50th time I've never advocated for mandates of any sort

    You are incorrect.

When it can be demonstrated (as jamil posted) that O2 levels in the blood drop with a mask compared to without one, then I'd say that's an indication that it's more than just an imaginary difference.

How many similar articles (directly referencing a study) do you want me to post before someone just decides to call me a liberal because you don't agree with scientific studies?

Does it not seem counterintuitive to always revise the test to keep people scoring the same?

Seems like you would want to leave the test be and let the scores be what they are.
The point of the scoring is to indicate distance from average. The score is not an absolute score. So yes, they’d need to recalibrate the test/scoring from time to time.

Politicized science is not science anymore than the world was flat when the religious leaders declared it.

The problem is that any study you disagree with, you call it politicized. What source would you accept a study from saying masks don't impede breathing?

    From your article (emphasis mine):
"Researchers asked healthy, active people to perform cycling exercises until exhaustion on three occasions."

I can't seem to see where they tested people with asthma or COPD. Perhaps you can point that out for me. That is after all the argument that was being made.

This is the part that I find hilariously ironic.

The people fervently complaining about someone choosing to wear a mask for whatever reason are the same people complaining about a "Karen" fervently complaining about someone not wearing a mask.

They've both chosen to judge someone else's behavior and draw conclusions from it without knowing that other person's situation.

I don't know mbills at all, so I'm not going to judge the reasoning behind why he has chosen to wear a mask. It's his decision to make, not mine.
I don’t care if mbills wears a mask or not. I’ve never said anything to anyone about their mask wearing or not mask wearing. There are Karen's on either side. I just try not to give a **** about whether people are wearing one or not. But I do laugh at the idiots wearing masks in situations where it’s obviously unnecessary or they’re wearing it wrong.
