Sorry, did not notice the date as I only ever scroll through the 1st page of threads so I stay current. This was on the 1st page of threads yesterday for some reason. I will pay more attention to the date from now on.

It's cool. Don't worry about dates. If you've got something to add go ahead and do it.

The reason this was revived was because I posted a link to it in another minimum wage thread.

So I stopped into Taco Bell for lunch today, because let’s face it, tacos are delicious. My order rings up to $6.48 and since I get the same thing nearly every time I go in, I was prepared with 6 dollars, a quarter, and three dimes for a total of $6.55.

The girl behind the counter is in her late teens or early 20s, and she looked absolutely perplexed when I handed her the money. She stared at it for a minute before asking me, “you gave me exact change right?”

I said, “No, since it’s $6.48, there would need to be pennies in there for it to be exact change.”

She looked at me funny before setting the money down on the counter, struggling to count it. After a few seconds she actually asked me if I would count it for her. I pointed to the coins and said, “25, 35, 45, 55,” as I took over what should be her job duties.

Still confused, she rang up $6.50 in the computer and said, “two cents is your change.”

I politely corrected her and let her know that she actually owed me seven cents back, but I wasn’t worried about the nickel. She just shrugged and told me she had a cold and wasn’t feeling very well, that’s why she was having so much trouble counting today.

As I was eating, she came out from behind the counter several times to sweep the dining room, all the while customers kept coming in. Not once did she say, “I’ll be with you in a moment” or offer any type of acknowledgement. At one point she even interrupted an elderly couple during their meal to ask them if they would move so she could sweep under their table. I couldn’t believe it when they actually did.

As I left, I walked past the register and I saw another customer with his change spread out on the counter. I could hear him counting out loud, “$3.50, 60, 70, 80.”

And we’re supposed to pay people like this $15 an hour as a minimum wage? Give me a break. She can’t even work the register. What’s she going to do with $15 an hour?

    Education -- Get some.
What is she going to do with $15 an hour you ask? Donate a tidy sum to the politician that got her paid $15 an hour, at least that's the plan.

I think the most disappointing part of the whole experience was not that the cashier wasn't smart enough to add up change, but that there was no management any where in sight. It's right in the middle of the lunch rush, and she was the point of contact for the customers.

She interrupted a couple in the middle of their meal to sweep out from under them. Obviously the manager knows nothing about customer service or this type of thing wouldn't happen.

If she can't handle the duties of the register, put her in another position that she can handle. As someone who has worked lot of restaurant and customer service jobs, it's sad to see that type of dysfunction. They clearly don't care about the customer experience or putting employees in a position where they can learn, grow and succeed.
You went to a place known for not having management thinking they might have management? They gave up paying real management long ago, they just have a crew leaders usually...

A married couple that I know (who are BOTH teachers) argue that we should not even teach kids math, because they will ALWAYS have a calculator with them (phone, watch, etc).

I would imagine this particular young lady wouldn't even have any idea who is responsible for getting $15hr minimum wage
Yes, but the unions do. Among its other effects, raising the minimum wage provides unions with a convenient argument that simply to stay at the same level, their CBAs have to provide for wages X amount above the minimum wage.

Math is one of the only subjects you should teach. Math and history would be my main 2 focuses. Then government and Econ. Throw in a little home ec, gym, and maybe science if it’s not today’s bs science, and you’re good to go.

I hadn't thought of this, but you're right. So a rising tide does lift up all boats. But it also does a lot of damage to the coastline if it rises too high.

That’s really short sighted. You teach simple concepts in math in early grades and build onto those increasingly complicated concepts to prepare them for the world and to continue onto higher education. It sounds to me like they’re projecting their own low aspirations .

Right. Besides having a calculator doesn't give you the ability to solve a problem. You have to understand how to break it down and in which order to solve equations, or even know how to apply the equation to the situation. But no matter what if you dumb it down enough more people will then be able to succeed.

I remember when the school my daughter went to announced they would no longer give 0's even if you didn't do the assignment you would receive a 50%. :ugh:
